Where do the souls of dead fish go?
Beneath the waves, there is a trail
of moving luminous forms.
Following, following, a solitary harvester.
This is Eternal Eclipse.
Some would say that death is a lonely, unfulfilling job. But when you are responsible for gathering up the souls of all kinds of aquatic creatures, there isn't time for boredom. It can even be pleasant at times. It is rather fascinating having a ghostly entourage of eels, turtles, fish, and other small dwellers of the ocean. When they have all swum their last, or have been lost, I have the task of leading everyone to their final resting place.
The best part of it all is being the one responsible for collecting the fish. I am almost fond of seeing the brilliant souls that don't fade greatly, even in death. And all the varieties are generally so agreeable to follow me that it doesn't take much persuading at all. Of course there's always an exception. Have you heard the phrase"'it's like herding cats'?" Try catfish. Even when I finally manage to urge them to come along, they never do so in an orderly fashion. I only put up with it because there is some small joy in seeing them swirl all about.
Like any job there is a downside. The greatest? Sharks. I avoid the big ones--that's someone else's job--but even the little ones like to bite. It's the strangest feeling having a soul trying to nibble on your tentacles. As for where I take them all?
Well that's only for me and the fish to know.
