So I have tried starting this thing like four different times and each time I get stuck on the fact that this is a journal. Journals always start with some kind of Dear Journal thing, but I can't think of something that would fit here. Like it's sorta strange addressing something that cant talk back, right? Ugh, I guess I'll just write Day _ even though that seems like someone counting the days they're trapped somewhere or you know what I'm just going to

Day 1
Today we started off on our biggest assignment yet! A couple weeks ago we came back to Respite after a long book gathering mission with around 7 old as heck books. Aris was super stoked because he might like books a lot, but he loves old books even more. Anyway, we were only one duo of a larger joint mission and I think the total across all groups was about 60 books. While I rested and got some more supplies, Aris joined the scholars in their attempts to get through the enormous pile of texts.

I looked in occasionally and some of them looked like they were trying to press themselves into the pages. But I'm getting distracted! In the gathered books was info on weapons and artifacts of ancient Subetan myth or legend. Some of the stuff was apparently really vague and helpful to no one but some of the others were fairly descriptive. Aris rambled off a list to me of everything but he was excited and thus was talking extremely fast and everything he said blurred together.

I do remember that he got louder and faster when he told me there were magic scrolls for protecting, healing, and even attacking. Really though I paid more attention to his description of legendary weapons because I don't think I'd have a knack for magic. These legendary weapons weren't like those from The Cat which destroyed everything but were really powerful all the same. The scholars decided we should send some of the most experienced duos out to try to find some of them.

What we found would be used by guardians to protect the aeanoids who resided in our cities and to gather food. The new council met and the chosen duos, me and Aris included, swore to bring back what we found for distribution. There also was some swearing that the weapons would not be used for anything other than defense against any of the sentient races. So that brings us to today where Aris and I set off for a blade called Infinite and scrolls called Cobalt Eternal and Terra Focujin (I had to ask how this was spelled like three times).

I realize now that a lot of this entry is about stuff that didn't happen day 1, but today was pretty boring. We just moved through the outskirts of Respite which is a super peaceful walk because the area has standing guardians. As we neared 6 hours of walking, Bella and Bella (My henrabbit Belladonna and Aris' dog Cerebella) got tired and we had to carry them the remaining 2 hours until we made a camp. Well I made camp while Aris wrote down the details of all the plants and creatures we saw in his records journal. I tried to go through it once but it's really hard to read to be honest.

Dinner was the first of the adventure. This obviously means there are still a lot of choices available and everything is fresh. I'm sure over the next few days my happiness about mealtime will fade pretty rapidly. We've apparently got a two to four week journey to look forward to depending on conditions. Hopefully there are more exciting things to write about tomorrow! But not like deadly fun. Just interesting things that don't threaten our lives.
Day 5
Allotropa has been here for all of 2 full days and he's really starting to piss me off. I don't know what I expected from him considering his entrance into the group was him trying to "save" me. The day I need a boy wearing heavy armor to save me from a Piproar is the day ancient Darkside freezes over. At least then I could laugh at him as he tried to stand in front of me, tripped, and landed in a heap of armor and awkwardness. I kinda hoped the piproar would've at least tried to scare him but they're super friendly so it just stared at me and Allotropa. But today we got to the library that was supposed to have one of the scrolls and he managed to get us trapped in here.

I mean we have our supplies, but a library isn't really my idea of a great place to be stuck. There are definitely other races with gatherer type people and we try to avoid them. Getting trapped in a location likely to attract gatherers is a mess and is entirely Allotropa's fault. Aris and him have been looking for a way to get out all day, and have only paused for meals so far. I avoided them and instead decided to eat on my own and read. After reading all day, I don't think I can really make fun of Aris for doing it anymore.

All the informative books were both fascinating and easier to read than anything Aris writes. Some of them were in depth guides on potions that would increase pets' (in ancient days, sentients now) strength, defense, endurance, speed, and even intelligence. There were also basic guides to non-legendary scrolls and magic in general. Then I found records of the foes that ancient ancestors of our races would fight and those individuals who became legends.

Brug did 489,592 total damage against Kiyo and was in the top ten for her tier (9 at the time).
Hit T10 on 5/28/2016
Three years ago a war between the many sentient conglomerates (hereafter referred to as races though this term is technically inadequate) started on our planet. Before the war, the groups had cooperated to build a society with technology beyond that of the ancient city of Centropolis and magic (albeit hidden) akin to ancient Saherimos. Both cities had long since changed and then dissipated by the time our sentient races became prominent. Interracial relations were tenuous at best. Differences between cultures became pronounced as the populations grew and land limitations forced disparate races together. We were the least populous advanced sentients before the war.

I was fourteen at the time so I didn't really notice the spiral towards animosity. Brugmansia, who would have been eleven, was completely unaware despite her parents' being the head of the diplomatic council. To me it seemed like the first battle sprung from nothing and ended as quickly as it began. Weapons technology by that point was advanced enough to ensure only a handful of hundreds of soldiers survived in each conflict. Survivors were counted to decide who had won a battle. The nauseating reality was that having four soldiers remaining was often a victory because the other race would have one.

I suppose Brug's parents did well diplomatically because no race attacked the aeanoids outright. That isn't to say the battles then didn't affect us. Many fled their homes with no belongings to avoid becoming collateral damage of the others’ battles. The fleeing and hiding lasted a year before the unthinkable happened.

The threat of nuclear weapons was waved around often during the conflict, but nobody ever followed through. Eventually, people grew complacent in the safety that mutually ensured destruction was deterrent enough. It wasn’t. The first of the weapons hit a continent not populated by any of the aeanoids’ various orders. Allies of the affected species fought back by using their own weapons. It took them two weeks to decimate populations of both sentient and non-sentient creatures. Only two weeks and the water turned to poison and earth became a scorched shell.

Our race wasn’t spared either and we lost many of our orders entirely. Nevertheless, the vast majority of our population survived in the cave plateaus. That region was uninhabited by the other races and truthfully hadn't been by ours either until the council suggested sheltering there. The plateau tops were ideal for the full sun requiring aeanoids while the forest at their base gave adequate light for part shade and full shade species. There was a rotating schedule both during the initial conflict and throughout the bombings. We'd only go to sun for the exact amount of time required before retreating into the caves. Underground and fungal parasitic species remained within the caves to help other species adjust.

We couldn't all fit in the caves at night so there were groups of runners- assigned the title Gatherers- who took shifts running towards lands where food and supplies could be collected. Those first gatherers ranged in age from fourteen to seventy. Fallout from nuclear weapons spread to destroy more and more of the land we relied on. The focus of runs shifted towards remaining cities where stores had nonperishable food and desperately needed supplies. I'll leave my account of those ghost town runs to my own journals but know that what we witnessed is what spurred the adults to meet as a council once more.

The council met with adults there to represent each order and sometimes each family (in the taxonomic sense). A caravan of five elders embarked towards a nearby forest the next day. It was rumored that the gods of our world could be contacted in the glade of the wild forest untouched by physical damage. It was not spared entirely though, and radiation had already began to kill non-sentient creatures and plants in the area.

I was not there and cannot give an exact account of what was said, but the deal struck can be easily explained. Our elders asked the gods to restore the non-sentient species and the wildlife and land that had been destroyed. Additionally they asked that the sentient species would be restored in populations equaling the aeanoids’ after the deal was complete. In return, the gods could take the lives of all of our adults as payment.

The gods agreed and gave that group a week to return and prepare the children before they'd collect on their end of the deal. When the elders returned, each with signs of low level radiation sickness, they gathered all the children and teenagers for a convocation. They explained the terms of the deal and what we would do in the time left until “the collection”. Teens who had already begun training in a skill like farming, sewing, fighting, teaching, or gathering were taught intensively. Children and those who would have been too young to specialize were taught a variety of skills at low levels of proficiency.

We were given detailed maps of our world showing our past cities and the locations of others we thought were intact. These cities were identified as places we should gather supplies for education and survival. The final day before collection was spent enjoying time with our parents and saying what goodbyes we could. My parents gave me advice and their guides to horticulture, creature species and biology, and magical artifacts. Brugmansia wouldn’t and wont share what her time with her parents was like.

No matter how hard we tried to stay awake until midnight, it seemed the gods thought it too cruel for us to watch our parents fade from existence. Twenty minutes until midnight, we all fell into a magical sleep that willpower couldn’t combat. We awoke to find the adults missing and a note written on some form of plant fiber parchment placed at the largest cave's entrance. It read:

"Aeanoids,

We have fulfilled our side of the deal and you have yours. The energy poison is not gone entirely but it has been lowered to livable levels. Species and the land have been restored but we make no promises as to their likeness to the original. You may find a wilder world. It may be teeming with more magic and sentience than you remember. Steel and glass and brick have been weakened as we see fit.

Do not think us cruel for manipulating terms to better suit us. Many of you will find that you are less limited than you were before. Some of your clades who would have died out will now live if you all are adept enough.

We would wish you luck, but we know what a bad jest that would be"

That day we met as a new community and discussed societal structure, roles, and communication. A council was newly elected from those who wished to represent families. Notably very few representatives were the children of previous council members. Education would proceed in the way it had where children would receive general education for their early years. When they felt they were ready, then they could choose one or multiple skills to specialize in.

The first roles were decided on a volunteer basis. Individuals volunteered as educators, skills masters, scholars, gatherers, and guardians. Council members also chose from these roles as they agreed diplomats who didn't understand the people's experiences would be ineffectual. Brugmansia's choice of guardian was a surprise, but my choice of gatherer was natural.

Our first few months in the altered planet can best be described as a learning experience. Gatherers who stayed close to our new home in the land around the plateaus learned stealth would enable them to complete jobs safely. The words the gods had left prompted us to explore city libraries for ancient books with more information on magic. It was on these journeys that we discovered that stealth was not sufficient when we wished to travel farther that our immediate vicinity. Previously harmless species had been changed into monstrous creatures that could easily destroy gatherers who weren't trained for fighting.

Brug and I were the first guardian and gatherer pair to be sent out. Our success and the knowledge that was the boon from our mission led to a new status quo of sending out pairs on any longer travels. A second status quo was established when we determined locations we believed to hold magical artifacts. Only those duos who had large amounts of previous experience were permitted to go on those journeys. Duos never really fostered intergroup competition or enmity because we spent so little time at home. Identities of the duos responsible for supply or knowledge gains were not revealed to avoid conflict when groups were home in our main city of Respite.

It is on my and Brug's journey to find Infinite that this journal of hers begins.
