Story

My hands flutter like butterfly wings. When I was little I played with cards and coins, swiping my foster brother's book of sleight-of-hand magic tricks and delighting in the thrill of how quickly I could make things vanish with a flourish of my long fingers. I made nickels appear and disappear, turn cards into whole different suits right beneath your nose. I found new, more advanced books at the library. I was at my happiest when my fingers were moving, flickering, undetected.

I had already moved onto picking pockets by the time I was adopted at 16.

My new parents were in their 60's, and they waited too long to have the energy for anyone younger. They gave me everything I asked for, but I didn't ask for much. Satisfaction for my restless fingers was my greatest occupation, and it was becoming more and more difficult to achieve, even once my parents got me into beauty school. Shuffling cards was muscle memory by then, a habit to stave off the worst of my nerves, and the thrill of kleptomania began to dull.

Then my friend got locked out by her boyfriend, and it was me she came to for help.

Their breakup was ugly, and he changed the locks while she was in class. So while she crashed on my couch, she gave me $100 to break in and grab some of her clothes and personal belongings. She knew when his next late night shift was, so I waited until then to pick the new locks he put in the back door and get my friend's things. It was like second nature, like a space I was meant to fit into my whole life. Like a key in a lock.
