A character by
There once was a hen named Debra.

She lived on a farm where a little old lady loved her animals.

She even knitted sweaters for the chickens.

And Debra was a happy hen on this little farm.

She strutted her stuff in her purple sweater, she pecked at the corn strewn in the yard, and she had her very own spot in the coop where she clucked herself to sleep at night.

But it bothered her that this life was all that her life was.

None of the other chickens shared her quiet sadness. They were chickens, after all - and they were good at it! There wasn't more to life for creatures like them, but more importantly: they simply didn't want anything more.

But Debra did.

And she managed to jump the fence one morning (although, depending upon who you ask on the farm, it was more like "fluttering" or "flopping" or "struggling over" the fence).

There was a moment in which her lovely sweater was caught on the old wire as she tumbled to the other side. She was suspended above the ground where the threads had caught, but she soon came free - with her sweater still clinging to the wire.

Debra was not a happy hen - she was scared.

And she was naked.

What had she done? She was a hen, not some free-range wild animal! She even had a sweater and corn to eat in the morning! What a terrible mistake she had made!

Debra was distressed, but as she looked at the chickens still at the barn, she realized how small their world was. It was all they knew - all that she had known. And she realized how big the world was where she stood.

Gathering her courage, she set off into the big, wide world.

She has led a life no normal chicken could ever comprehend - nor would they want to. Debra's new life has challenged her, but has also been far more fulfilling than wearing a sweater and pecking at corn in the yard ever was.

Her sweater still hangs on the fence, where it has since faded and started to come undone. To those who do not understand growth, it looks like complete destruction.

But Debra is a happy hen.
