Cubo hatched from his egg on a Thursday much like any other, not that he had experienced any other day of the week yet to compare it to. Cubo crawled from the wreckage that was the remains of his egg and the remains of the building he'd landed on. His egg must have been traveling pretty fast, because the structure was completely destroyed. Cubo looked around and saw no one. Loneliness panged in his chest. He knew instinctively there should be someone to look out for him, someone to show him what to do, someone like a mother. The word was new to Cubo but it came to him like the word for the shell he emerged from -- egg -- and the word for the stuff currently filling his lungs -- air. The world was apparently full of such words, and Cubo had so many to learn. Right now though he only wanted two things. A mother, and food. Hopefully, in that order.

He crawled through the debris until he found his way out into the sunshine. There was still no one around to be seen, but there were soft noises coming from another structure nearby, a barn, he realized as the word revealed itself to him. He slithered that direction. The barn was not in very good shape. The paint was peeling, and half of the roof seemed to be missing, but there were definitely sounds of something living coming from inside. Cubo found an opening on one wall and went inside.

The noises were coming from a small number of animals sitting on nests made of hay that were lined up on wooden benches. The words came to him one after another, and then the word for the animals, chickens! They were clucking happily and didn't seem the least alarmed by Cubo's sudden presence, but then there was a loud shriek behind him and Cubo turned to face a chicken who looked a little different from the others, more red, skinnier, and above all, angrier. This one was a rooster. The rooster crowed his defiant shriek again, but came no closer to Cubo. Cubo did his best to mimic the rooster's cry and the rooster turned tail and quickly flew from the barn as fast as his scrawny legs could take him.

Feeling victorious, Cubo took a seat on one of the empty nests next to the biggest hen. She clucked approvingly at him and Cubo did his best to cluck gratefully back. For the rest of the morning Cubo sat happily with the chickens, wondering when he'd be old enough to lay an egg of his own like the hens.

That afternoon, Cubo received his first human visitor. Presumably drawn by the spectacle that was the now-demolished farm house where Cubo's egg had crash landed, an older gentleman in overalls poked his head in the barn.

"Anybody in here?" He asked, "Don't know what you did to the house there, but the rooster outside is looking like he's seen the end of the world. I don't want no trouble, now, just want to know what happened."

"Nobody here but just us chickens!" Cubo pipped up, proud of himself for correctly pronouncing the words with his fangs and forked tongue as they popped into his head.

The man turned to stare in abject horror at alien before him sitting with the hens. "What the Hell?" he sputtered, before leaving the barn much faster than he'd arrived.

Cubo turned to the hens to cluck at them questioningly, but they just shrugged and clucked back as if to say "Who knows with humans, they're all crazy anyway."

He nodded in agreement. He didn't have much experience with humans, that man being the only one he'd ever seen and Cubo having just hatched this morning, but the chickens seemed to be the most level headed ones here right now and he had to appreciate that.

"I've decided you should be my mother," Cubo clucked at the largest hen beside him. "You seem very wise."

The hen fluffed her feathers up with pride and layed an egg with a satisfied coo. Cubo wished he could lay eggs too, but he couldn't seem to do that yet. His stomach gurgled and he realized he still had not eaten anything. The hen seemed to hear this and she stood up to walk over to a bucket that was filled with grain. Cubo sniffed the grain but decided he didn't like grain. Out of the corner of his eye, Cubo saw something move. The hen noticed too and lunged forward to grab whatever the thing was with her talons. It was a mouse, the word coming to Cubo like all the others, and the hen offered it to Cubo.

Cubo sniffed at the mouse, then experimentally swallowed it whole. The taste was delicious, and Cubo purred with delight. He decided he really liked mice. The hen pecked a little at the grain before heading back to her spot on her nest.

Cubo spent most of the afternoon hunting mice. The barn apparently had a lot of them, and they weren't all so easy to catch as the chickens made it look, but he eventually got the hang of it. By the time more humans showed up to the barn Cubo had caught and eaten almost ten of them and he was back on his own nest, clucking happily with the chickens.

"It's right in there, sir," Cubo could hear the muffled voice of the man who'd seen him earlier outside the barn, "Don't know what it is, but I guess it's the thing that took out the old Miller place. It talked, too! Said it was a chicken or something but it ain't like any chicken I ever seen."

"Thank you, that will be all. Please leave this to the professionals now," a different voice spoke, softer, and younger than the first. The barn's door slowly opened and a man Cubo didn't recognize stepped inside.

"Sorry if my friend there alarmed you, little one," the man spoke directly to Cubo. "He's never seen an alien before, you have to forgive him."

"Alien?" Cubo asked. He searched his head for the meaning of the word, but nothing came to him.

"Extraterrestrial," the man explained. "Not from around these parts, if you will." The man chuckled, presumably at his own wit and knelt down next to Cubo. The hens eyed the man warily. "I'm Special Agent Colfax," he said, and held out his hand. "It's nice to meet you."

Cubo sniffed the man's hand, not sure what to do with it.

The man laughed again and pulled his hand back. "Of course, you've never shaken hands before. Don't sweat it. Your English is very good for one so young, and not even from this planet. You will have to explain that one to me someday. Do you have a name?"

"Cubo," Cubo replied. "You called me an alien, and an extraterrestrial. That means I'm from outer space?"

"Yes," Colfax said, "The egg you hatched from crashed into the farmhouse nearby like a meteor. We're not sure where you come from, or even what species you are, but I can help you figure that out if you like. My job is investigating cases like yours. Cases other people don't understand."

"Species?" Cubo mused, "Guess you could say I'm a 'whatever.' It's the only word that pops into my head when I think about what am I."

"Alright then, Cubo the Whatever. Would you like to come with me to the SAI headquarters? I can help you learn about who you are and where you come from, and you can meet other extraterrestrials I'm helping too."

Cubo looked around the barn and at the hens sitting on their nests, occasionally clucking nervously. "Can my family come too?"

"Family?" Colfax looked confused for the first time that Cubo had seen. "Do you mean the chickens?"

"Yes." Cubo said confidently. "And the rooster outside. I feel like we understand each other."

Colfax threw his hands up in surrender. "If it will get you to come with me, we'll bring the whole barn. That's what SAI resources will do for you. Do we have a deal, then?"

"Deal," Cubo nodded.

And that's how eight hens, one rooster, and one Whatever came to live in the basement of the SAI headquarters.
