However, neither she nor the other caterpillars realized she belonged to a separate species.
"My wings will be the most orange!"
"And my wings will be the most spotted!"
"Mine are going to be the brightest!"
They all squeaked gleefully as they boasted their potential, certain of their impending beauty.
Gisella was happy among her friends and was just as excited to fledge. They admired those who had already gained their wings as they fluttered about effortlessly in the springtime sunlight.
Gisella wanted to be beautiful, too. And as she wove her chrysalis in the company of the caterpillars, she ached to wake quickly and spread her wings.
But when she finally did, she was met with awkward stares and sideways glances. Her friends, undeniably beautiful with their new wings, failed to ease her uncertainty as she awaited their approval.
"Goodness, Gisella... Your wings are..."
"Well, they're not exactly orange."
"And you don't have many spots."
"They're not very bright, really."
Gisella was at a loss. Her wings were all wrong! How could this happen?
Her troubles did not end there. She found herself uncomfortable in the sunlight and struggled to keep up with her friends. Despite her efforts to blend in with her old companions, they often appeared embarrassed to be seen around her.
It wasn't long before she found herself very much alone.
In her loneliness, she finally succumbed to the draw of the night. She had always hidden herself away from the moonlight, but discovered an entirely new world as she stretched her wings in the cool night air.
The world was painted in swathes of silver moonlight and the trees creaked in lovely melodies. Fireflies hummed in the air under a sky splashed in stars.
As she drank in the night air, she found many of her own kind basking under the stars on wings of jade. She had never seen such beautiful creatures!
She realized that she wasn't a beautiful butterfly at all. She wasn't covered in spots, tangerine tones, or belonged in a world covered in sunlight; she was an entirely different creature altogether.
She was an elegant moth instead.
And she had never been more thankful.
And for the first time in a very long time, she felt as though she was right where she belonged - under a sky full of stars on emerald wings.
