Story
He's fought many battles. Literal ones - his hands gripping a rifle so tight his knuckles whitened, his head swimming with nationalistic fervor, hungry to do the right thing so badly he would kill for it. Figurative ones - jostling in a crowd of thousands, throat hoarse from raising his voice with the others to John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance."
The frontlines don't hold the promise of valor and victory for him like they used to. He's tired of raising banners and fighting for causes.
Now he just fights to keep his apartment when the rent is late, to afford new canvases so he doesn't have to paint over other pieces when inspiration strikes him. He isn't happy, per se, but he is content.

Late nights are the goddamn worst. He jams the door closed with his shoulder and clicks the three locks shut. Being the only tattoo shop open later than 9 meant every drunk or stupid asshole in town came crawling to him expecting to get inked on the spot. He’d had a group of high schoolers once, at least they were not quite so depressing as the others, and much easier to shoo out the door. He’d call cabs every now and then, for the particularly smashed, but such consideration for every miserable soul in this urban hellhole was too taxing a job for one man. And, perhaps, it had desensitized him more than he would have liked.
He'll have his own parlor, someday. Where he can keep whatever hours he likes and make it as classy as he pleases.
He shrugs out of his coat and unwinds his scarf, hanging both from the door handle. His apartment is spacious, for a studio, and he doesn’t need a lot of room in the first place. Just enough for a mattress on the floor near the space heater and a tarp-covered corner for an easel and a stack of canvases. He peels off his flannel shirt to leave it in a pile on the floor, gets a plastic cup of water from the kitchen, and stands before the easel.
It’s nothing right now, a mess of vague shapes and shadows. He’s not sure where this one is going yet; it’s a new canvas, and the sharp glare of blank canvas was too imposing to just leave alone. So Tom will mix paints and sweep brushes across cloth until it shows him what it should become.
His cell phone hums where he left it on his bed. He glances over; he can just make out Kris' picture on the screen. When Tom ignores it, the phone only vibrates a couple more times before going silent. He has learned by now that Tom's painting moods seize him at a moment's notice, and that he is rarely good company when they do. He'll call again tomorrow.
Stress leaks out of Tom's shoulders through the paintbrushes. He only paints as long as it takes to sap the tension out of his muscles, the sharp curling odor of paint fumes settling his mind, and then he collects brushes and the water cup to dump all of them in the kitchen sink. He doesn't let himself get absorbed anymore; he has to savor every stroke, let it linger in his thoughts like a flavor on the tongue. Something to think about and look forward to when nothing else will get him through the day.
He tugs his t-shirt off, now spattered with a few new blotches of paint to make the other ones look old, and kicks off his jeans. Someday, he's sure, sinking down into bed. Someday, painting will be a leisure again, not a ward against desperation.
