When Chihiro's parents are turned into pigs for the crime of eating food intended for the gods, the young girl is left to fend for herself. At first, her only aid is Haku, a mysterious boy who finds her shelter and a job in a bathhouse that caters to these spirits. Eventually, Chihiro makes more friends as she searches for a way to make her parents human again and escape the spirit world - before she forgets her real identity.

Although described by Yubaba as "a spoiled, lazy crybaby [with] no manners," we learn that Chihiro is more mature and resourceful than she appears. She suffers through her job at the bathhouse, lonely and yearning for her parents but in time, she becomes increasingly determined to survive and do whatever it takes to help Haku and her parents.
