Waiting for the display
Leonids counted down the minutes. A year's worth of planning had gone into this, and it wouldn't do to have his display ruined by poor time keeping at the last minute. He'd arranged for the cloud cover to disappear just before the display was due to begin, although he knew from experience that those strange humans were likely to give up before the clouds cleared. The younger humans would still be there, he hoped; those allowed to stay up late tonight to watch. Maybe those older humans stumbling home from a night out, spotting his display and wondering the next morning if they had really seen that at all.
Three minutes to go
Sometimes he wished he could do a display in daylight hours, but he knew that would never work. For a start the sun would be so bright that you wouldn't be able to see any of the display, but also he needed to pay attention to the other side of the world. His job was to ensure the dark side of the world saw his displays, and that always happened late at night when those little humans were meant to be asleep.
90 seconds to go
Watching the clouds break apart, he wondered how many humans were still watching. He'd broken the rules and asked for the cloud cover to break slightly earlier than planned, but if the clouds had stayed over too long, he was worried that no humans would even bother watching. Leonids knew he'd have to account for his decision later in the week, but he hoped that a large crowd watching from the ground would help to show he'd done the right thing.
Five, four, three, two, one
Counting down the last few seconds, Leonids released the shower of meteors at carefully designated intervals. Some years he'd be more generous than others, but this year he'd been told to not overdo things. Apparently if he held back and only released a small amount, those humans would be more eager to watch next year in case there was a fantastic meteor shower. Leonids shook his head as he released a couple more meteors; he didn't think he would ever understand humans.

The Leonids are a meteor shower associated with the Tempel-Tuttle comet, which appear to come from the Leo constellation. They are usually visible in November, with peaks averaging once every 33-or-so years. Source: Wikipedia
