It was "Ette", short for "Cassette", never Cass/Cassie, full name Cassette Echo Decker, and yes, she'd picked her name herself. She'd been interested in retro technology even before her transition, but afterward, that interest had been cranked up to 11.
But cassettes were only the tip of the iceberg. She collected it all, functional and non-functional, never opened and very used, brand and knock off alike. All of it piled, with love and care, in her overstuffed bedroom. Cords flowed out from cardboard boxes like waterfalls, tangled all to hell, piling up on the floor. VHS tapes stacked on a VCR stacked on an old CRT. All of it lovingly tracked and categorized in a massive spreadsheet she updated almost every single day.
