It was late at night on the small Veta Lake farm - but Claribel was wide-awake.
"Claribel," said her father, shaking his head softly, "you should be asleep!"
"But I can't sleep," said Claribel. "I need another story."
"No more stories," said the bull. "I told you five already."
"Then maybe another snack?" said Claribel.
But the bull rolled his eyes. "No, Claribel. You just had some hay five minutes ago. What you should do now, young calf, is go to sleep!"
"Ok, Daddy," said Claribel. Then she did as her dad told her and closed her eyes. But seconds later, they popped open again.
"Dad!" Claribel called out. "Daaaad!"
"Claribel!" the bull groaned. "I'm beginning to lose my patience!"
"But, Daddy," said Claribel, "I... I... I heard a noise."
"What kind of noise?" Her father asked.
"Um... a... a spooky noise," answered Claribel.
"Hmph." Claribel could tell her father did not like this reason for being awake either. But still, he stopped and listened... and listened... and listened.
"I don't hear anything, Claribel," he said after a moment.
So Claribel tried her best to shut her eyes real tight and get comfortable. She wiggled this way... then that way... then this way again. But nothing worked.
"Daaaaaaaaaaad!" She called out.
"Claribel," the bull said. "For the last time, it's time to go to sleep. If you call for me again, it had better be a good one or... or... or else. Good night!"
Now, Claribel knew her father well, and she knew when the bull was just a teeny, itsy, bitsy bit angry with her. But Claribel also knew that when you can't go to sleep, you can't go to sleep. And no matter how many sheep or chickens or pigs you count; no matter how mad your dad gets - you'll never go to sleep until you're absolutely, positively, no-doubt-about-it ready. And Claribel wasn't. But why not?
Suddenly, Claribel bolted up. "Daddy!" she shouted. "Dad! Oh, Daaaaad!"
"All right. That's it, Claribel!" the bull said.
"But Daddy," Claribel said. "There's one more thing I really, really, truly need. Then I promise, I'll go to sleep."
And with that, she snuggled into her father's side for a great, big good-night hug.
"I love you, Daddy," she said. "See you in the morning."
"Claribel," said her father, shaking his head softly, "you should be asleep!"
