Demi

(DEM-ee)

Demi (singular and plural) are a medium-sized, omnivorous species. At 22-28 lbs (10-13 kgs), they are lighter than their appearance might suggest; their manes, large paws and relatively long legs can be deceptive. Their adaptable nature allows them to live in forests, grasslands and mountainous regions. While today’s demi has a range that extends from Veta to the northern tip of the continent, records suggest that its predecessors might have resided in Saherimos. Demi live in small, tight-knit familial groups whose members share the task of taking care of the young. Litters are relatively small- comprised of 2-4 pups- and generally stay with their families until they reach maturity at the age of two.

One of its most notable features, demi have manes that extend down their backside and are present in males and females alike. The mane has a unique texture, with hair separating into individual locks. Their thickly-furred, padded paws give them an especially soft footstep and their long tails, held curled at rest, can be used for balance while running. Combined, these two features make them fairly fast and agile!

Perhaps as notable as the mane, each demi has a single straight, fluted horn that grows from the center of the forehead. Again, both males and females have this trait, though a male demi’s horn is slightly longer on average. The (small) horn is present at birth, and continues to grow until the demi reaches full maturity. Researchers are still in disagreement over the purpose of the horn: some conjecture that it is used for sparring or self-defense, but others argue that the horn’s shortness make it unsuited to those tasks. A competing theory suggests that the horn has some sensory ability that is not yet understood. Some cultures believe that the horn has mystical properties, but that too is unconfirmed!

Demi have become ubiquitous as pets but can be difficult to spot in the wild; they often go unnoticed due to their shyness. As a pet, a demi is cautious meeting new people, but will form a strong, lifelong bond with those who earn its trust. It is easy to see why this quiet, undemanding and friendly pet has become so popular!
