Neela

(NEE-lah)

The neela, native to the Saherimos / The Sacred Lands, were once thought to be a beast of myth and legend, or at least an animal extinct since the time of the old empire. Many stories report the abilities of these beasts, from their alleged talent of healing with their tears, to the idea that they themselves are a kind of sand spirit, able to command the desert itself in order to protect their location.

They have an unsurpassed sense of direction, able to navigate the ever-changing sands of the Saherimos with ease, and (perhaps more importantly) also have an aptitude for finding water. It is not unusual to find several wild specimens basking in hidden desert oases.

Neelas weigh between 400-600 lbs (181-272 kg), though a full-grown male can easily weigh up to 700 lbs (317.5 kg), and they stand between 4ft 12 inches - 5ft 3 inches (1.52 m - 1.6 m) tall at the shoulder. Both male and female neelas grow horns of around 2ft 6 inches (0.75 m), though the sizes can vary even between the same gender. Neelas are herd animals, and a group of neelas, known as a mirage, will travel in unison for many miles around the desert. Females give birth to usually only one baby a year, though some cases of twins have been reported.

Neelas are not easily trained, requiring dedication and patience, but once bonded to their owner, they are loyal companions. While they may never be described as affectionate, they make even-tempered pets for a family, and are also suited for work as pack beasts and mounts.
