Kanis

(KAY-nis)

The kanis is one of the oldest species on Subeta, and serves a multitude of purposes in both Subeta's ecosystem as well as their economy. Being a sturdy animal - and a prolific breeder - the kanis is found in nearly every corner of the globe, from the coldest altitudes of the Arctic Frost to the desolate sands of the Sacred Lands. They can adapt and survive to a multitude of situations, which has made them quite cherished as companions, but also quite abhorred as pests!

Kanises are quite stocky - they have short, robust bodies with powerful back legs and a rather heavy weight for their size, weighing from 10-15 pounds (4.5-6.8 kg). Their fur thickness can change depending on where they live, but kanises, especially those in colder regions, are said to have the softest fur in all of Subeta. Kanises live in large communal burrows with various dens that serve different purposes - some as a birthing room, others as a nursery, and even a large, main burrow that serves as an overall space to socialize. Females can give birth throughout the year, and they will give birth from 3 and up to 12 kittens at a time. Kittens grow quickly and are able to live on their own at just 5-6 weeks of age, though rarely do they have a reason to leave their birth warren.

In areas that rely heavily on agriculture, kanises are considered a pest, for they will dig up fencing, ransack crops, and destroy even the hardiest vegetable patches. However, they are also an important farm animal themselves, as they are easy to raise and breed and supply many areas of Subeta with a high protein food source. For hundreds of years, both the Ytivi and the Tormirgard people of the Arctic Frost have relied on kanis fur, for it has incredible cold-resistant properties. In residential areas, people seem to have a love-hate relationship with kanises; their presence in a garden is considered good luck, but it often results in overturned earth!

Kanises are extremely popular in the pet trade. They are hardy, loving pets that are extremely loyal to their families. In more mild climates, kanises can live an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, but their rotund size does require them to have quite a large habitat - otherwise they are prone to obesity! They require plenty of roughage such as hay and tough grasses, as well as a variety of fresh vegetables (curly parsley and rainbow carrots seem to be their favorite). They make wonderful lap pets and love to be carried and cuddled. It is often said that kanises have a unique ability to truly sense how their owners are feeling. They seem very in-tune with both extreme moods of happiness and sadness, and kanises are known to seek out and comfort their owners when they are upset - even if the person shows no outward signs of distress.
