Actually the only bird that can fly backwards is the hummingbird, but their anatomy is much different then that of normal birds. The Lain is not based on a hummingbird anatomy wise as stated by the artists, but rather a song bird. <br />

And regardless, a hummingbird does not fly backwards on its back, it would just plummet to the ground if it tried flying like that.

Detailing is lovely, no doubt about that. But the pose is just off. <br />

Why would a phoenix thats rising from the ashes be rising from its bum/look like its falling on its bum? That just doesn't seem practical in the least.<br />

Unless the ashes were somehow glued to the ceiling and the when he was reborn gravity took over and he fell from the ceiling. That would explain the pose.

I think that the detail and overall stance of the Lain is amazing. My only problem arises in the fact that even if it's rising from the ashes like I assume it's doing and someone mentioned, it just seems too square to me, and less fluid than the other elements [particularly on the right corner]. But hey, there's only so much, so it's totally fine. :3
Oh, that is excellent. I wasn't entirely happy with the wing shape on the basic Lains, but it's absolutely spot-on here. Thank you!
