Sincere blue eyes looked up at the woman piteously under a blonde fringe. The little popoko wept in shaking sobs as he crouched by the line for the ice cream stand at Delphi beach's carnival.
"My mommy is lost." The child cried rubbing his sky-blue eyes with his paws.

The woman looked panicked in the face of the crying child. She never claimed to be maternal, but the poor kid was so genuine in his distress it pulled at her heartstrings. Looking around her eyes caught on the sign advertising ice cream, and thanked Shinwa for the intervention.

"Here, lets get you some ice cream and I'll get the park authorities to find your mother." She said in a rush trying to forestall further waterworks. Instead she was rewarded with a brilliant smile that lit up the urchin's face.
"Thank you miss'us. Please don't leave me?" The popoko pleaded.

Relenting, for now, the woman ordered the boy a large dessert and questioned him as he tucked into his treat. They ended up chatting long enough for the boy to end up with another sundae. As the boy grew more comfortable he stopped crying and brightened. As the sun started to set however, the boy fretted as did the woman. It was past time for the child's mother to have returned. She needed to inform the park attendants. Smiling at the child she told him she'd be right back. She was reluctantly touched when the boy gave her a big hug before she left.

When she returned the popoko was gone.... and so, she realized, was her wallet.

Blocks away the popoko counted out bills into his hand with a nod of satisfaction.
A good lift, if he did say so himself. He vanished into the night with a sincere smile on his face.
