Beginnings

This once-red Cadogre's life began long, long ago, in the early days of Blackmoon Incorporated.

As subject #KY11_20 marched across the assembly line with the rest of his cycle mates, a recurring error inside of his head impeded the group's flow. His servos kinked and paused recurrently. His eyes flickered as he tried to self-diagnose ahead of the final check at the factory doors. Red alarm lights flashed when he was presented to the inspector.

Turned aside and sent instead toward the scrap heap, he was depowered and thrown carelessly away, a discarded frame unfit for serving Blackmoon Incorporated's ambitions. His life and journey should have concluded at the end of that month, when all of the rest of the useless machinery was sent away to be broken down and reprocessed for mining operations.

But here this Cadogre's fate was changed. He was not secured as well as the others and when the ship took off into the distant skies for Atebus the great rumbling shook loose the constraint bolts that tethered him in position. By a chance of simple error, what some would say was perhaps even pity from Shinwa in the Sacred Lands, he fell away shortly before breaking the exosphere entirely.

The heat of reentry boiled his metallic flesh and scorched his slumbering core until it reignited with energy, and snipped wires were soldered back together into a tangled whole that further compounded the truth of his flaws - his growth of skill would always be imbalanced; he could never rise evenly in the tiers of combat as he was so designed. Crashing into the cold waters of the Veta Lake with that half-conscious thought circling within his mind, he was rescued and taken into the shelter until it could be decided what to do with this strange new creature.

Lacking the original constraints - those burned away during his essential rebirth - he was unbound to the loyalty every other Cadogre owed to Calvin Blackmoon, and yet deep down inside as he beheld the other strays carried off by loving Subetans, his frame trembled with an empty longing for that feeling again in the face of the hard fact of his disposal.

Potential adopters came and went until the Cadogre was all alone... and then, on a cold spring evening, Elysium entered the shelter and beheld the only pet left, laying in a corner miserable and with only the faintest scrap of hope left behind dull eyes.

"You're just what I'm looking for," his would-be owner said.

Unsure, uncertain, light lit up the Cadogre's gaze, and his head rose up from his paws.

"How about it? Do you want to come home with me?"

And thus began the journey of a once-red Cadogre named Kilroy___, destined for great and terrible deeds in the years down the road.

Trial and Foe

Shortly after arriving home, Kilroy and his owner noticed the urge which the Cadogre possessed to prove himself. As the glories of the Battle Colosseum were broadcast and the famous battle-pets of the day fought valiantly for the honor of their owners, Kilroy's excitement at the prospect lead them off to Riverside to enlist in training regiments. It would take many weeks before Jim could put together a course suited to the wayward pet's build which could in fact strengthen him.

With great diligence and persistence, Kilroy pushed his inept structure to keep up with the other pets. It was long, arduous work, and yet the benefits began to shine, and so just twenty-one months after being decommissioned and brought back to life, Kilroy met his first rival - the M4-L155.

The mechanical cat was another project developed by Blackmoon Incorporated as a gift to the Colosseum to curry favor and allay suspicions amongst the Subeta Council, and it recognized Kilroy as surely as he recognized it from their brief overlap at the old factory. Kilroy was unsure of himself, going up against a creature built by his old master's hands, yet with his owner cheering him on, the Cadogre threw his all into the match. It would prove to just barely be enough, and in subsequent sessions, almost a fluke.

With time Kilroy suffered losses, yet he never surrendered. When he grew disheartened, Elysium drew him back to himself.

"You're not the same as the others. You're my Cadogre, and you're stronger than they will ever be because I believe you are, and you know you are too deep down underneath your fear."

And so Kilroy rose to meet the challenge. Every time the M4 beat him down, he crawled back up to his feet and stood there in defiance. Every time he endured another blow, and answered in kind, he grew a little more than he had been when he first set foot upon the battle grounds.

And then the day came three months since that first victory when he fell no more. He fought and he won again... and the next time that Kilroy and his owner requested a match against the M4, it was discovered that the cat had gone, recalled for extensive repairs.

Soldiers of the Great Night

Only a month hence as the cold winds rolled in and the night lengthened, the bell-time toll of their first major Morostide began. Kilroy was not greatly enthused about the celebrations, but when the armies lurking out of sight began to emerge, the Cadogre and his owner were among the many Subetans who rose to the challenge in what would become an annual affair.

Though valiant and enthusiastic in this first encounter, after wading through the vast hordes of the Deathly Harbingers, Lingering Haunts, and the Torchbearers, the inexplicable wall began to rise in the form of the advancing beasts, Candy Scorn, Wolve, and the death-knell, Carrion Lord.

Kilroy fell back at last when faced by this trio of brutal generals to the ultimate she-devil, the Nightlady. To others he was forced to look, and behold, as older pets, greater heroes and warriors, drove back the scourge at the heart of the night. It burned in him to be so powerless, and in the aftermath as the breech was closed and the celebrations renewed, he drove himself ever-harder on the training fields and in the Battle Colosseum.

All of his efforts would pay back dividends down the road, and he too would eventually step into the very role which he beheld as just a young Cadogre, conquering the Nightlady and the true face of evil, Rouland, but for now such was just a dream and a hope to strive toward.

~Goo...p~

The next major incident to highlight Kilroy's life came with the Gelatin Invasion.

To this point his combat had been spent in contesting himself against solid foes, be they of flesh or metal. He was ill-prepared when the first Mini Gelatins crawled out of the sea to terrorize Centropolis. The slimy creatures dissolved apart as he slashed at them, and oozed out through the gaps in his armor when he gnashed and swallowed, then to go ~squick~ and consolidate once more.

The matter only grew more dire as the crawling masses pooled together to evolve into Gelatin Gliders, and then they into Gelatin Golems.

With no augmentations available, no true elemental prowess to assist his attacks, Kilroy was next to powerless, and for every attempt which he made, their mildly acidic nature took a toll upon his body, to say nothing of the thudding blows dealt back by the bright pink beasts.

In the end his owner worriedly withdrew Kilroy from the front lines, despite the Cadogre's desperate perseverance.

Looking to the stars

Much of the confidence which Kilroy had amassed, and the pride which he bore toward his progress, appeared to be irrevocably damaged in the wake of his utter futility during the Gelatin Invasion.

The worst news was yet to come, however, until the treatment of the Healer proved that Kilroy was beyond her skill - he had amassed too much internal corrosion for her talents alone to overcome.

"What do you mean?" his owner's features mirrored what Kilroy felt.

Within a year, at the very most, the Cadogre would become a broken down lump of rust, and to persist in training, let alone matches in the Battle Colosseum, would be to see him obsoleted that much sooner.

It was heart-breaking. Tragic. The only possible answer then was to seek out the very man who had first built the Cadogre line - a man who was impossible to track down, and whose factories had since left behind Subeta in favor of the moon.

They would have to take a shuttle to Ziara City. A costly price, yet one well worth it, if fortunately timed.

Deadline

"We'll get you patched up and running just like you used to, Kilroy."

The Cadogre could only limp along, dejected. Both pet and owner recognized the long odds in their way. After all, the M4-L155 had been taken back by Blackmoon Incorporated months before, and never returned. What if they actually met the man, or some engineer underling, who took a look at Kilroy and smiled and shuffled him off behind closed doors to never see the light of day again?

Yet such was not meant to be. They had been an hour after disembarking, attempting to make their way through the curious new domain, when the alert rang out through the city - Murder.

The death of Vernon Yun could be traced to no certain suspects. Inspector Thorpe glanced askew at each person and pet who he encountered and subsequently 'volunteered' to assist him in the matter, regardless of the protest raised. In such a way was Kilroy carried into the matter, and despite the grave air, something about it all lifted his own spirits. Perhaps, if he and his owner could bring the murderer to justice, they could earn enough favor not to be trundled off and disposed of so readily.

The days passed by. Though they made good guesses, when Marcel Martinez revealed his true intentions, they had ultimately guessed wrong. Yet all was not lost. As the Steamwork soldiers of the madman were loosed, Kilroy's lost battling spirit burned anew. He fought with a savagery against the other machines that spoke of his true, slumbering prowess, ignoring the occasional hang in his response timing and the ease with which his armor creaked, cracked, and crumbled.

Then came the Wyrmgear, and Marcel the Miser himself.

Though breaking down, Kilroy nevertheless threw himself into the last strife. He, along with the many other spent and weaker pets kept the attention on themselves while the true fighters struck and wore down the opposition. It was truly a joint effort, and in the aftermath, when Elysium once more found his beloved Cadogre, Kilroy had exacerbated the strain upon his body greatly. If he survived much longer, it would take a miracle.

Imbued with light

Once Inspector Thorpe finally cleared all involved to return to their lives, a momentary hope presented itself. Yun Enterprises unveiled the first Steamwork schematic in short order. If anyone might be able to repair Kilroy with true and good intentions, it would be Issac and Jules Yun.

But that, too, was not yet meant to be. Neither man could puzzle out the mechanics of Calvin Blackmoon's work any better than had the Healer, and even if they could have, it would take them time to consolidate a working schematic.

Time which Kilroy did not have.

That left them with only once choice. The imposing slate and vermilion structure situated high above the rest of Ziara City.

Blackmoon Incorporated.

The next day Kilroy and Elysium set out to take the long hike when they beheld a breathtaking sight - a blue and gold pet that seemed to hum with life, and the ecstatic owner who it belonged to. And as they looked around, more such pets of differing species appeared, whereas before not a single kind had been observed. They were told, upon inquiry, to make the pilgrimage to the Coda Caves and ask for the blessings of the proud people therein.

And so owner and pet followed the throng and beheld first hand the miracles in play. Iltallo begrudgingly accepted the sacred crystals and performed the ritual to transfer that blessed light, one by one, until then stood Kilroy and his owner before the aged figure.

"This is what you want, right? A chance to become more like you were always meant to be?" the Cadogre's owner asked softly.

And it was.

Though empty-handed, being the first day of two, Iltallo sent them on their way to mine for the precious gems. Wearying though the task proved to be, as midnight passed and early morning rose upon the 7th of the month, Kilroy underwent the magical transformation to become a Galactic Cadogre.

He was not wholly fixed, and indeed, the errors that had presented themselves to him long ago were only furthered by the incredible feat, yet he was hale, restored to a fully functional body sans the deficit of armor, and stronger than he had been before confronting the Gelatin Invasion.

"Incredible! Look at you now!" his owner crowed with tears of joy on his face.

With a redoubled vigor, Kilroy and Elysium returned to Subeta to not only celebrate, but to resume his training - and take it even further.

Progression

As the years carried on and Kilroy's battle record both within the Battle Colosseum and around the world strengthened, conquering Replika, Llindorm and Mechalag, going on to drive back the three generals of the Morostide and later the very same golems of the Gelatin Invasion which had once so seriously harmed him, a sort of early tranquility presented itself to the Cadogre.

He no longer felt the urgent need to prove himself, for his face had become known amongst the middling ground of battlers, and his accomplishments were good, if not yet great.

However, deep down inside, the longing for more, to face down the greater foes, still lingered in his heart, and gave him motivation to persist at a more gradual pace.

The events of the Islander War had passed both he and his owner by while they visited Ziara City to give their yearly thanks to the peoples of the Coda Caves, without whom Kilroy would have surely perished.

When they returned to Subeta, a new, surly face presented itself in the form of Fish Breath Jacques, and the grinning Recycle Beast.

Swaying sands

Some several months thereafter, Blake Steele's call to Subetans to join him in Saherimos for the great dig spurred Kilroy and Elysium to make the journey and see what all the fuss was about.

The puzzles were of little great consequence, which his owner chiefly dealt with, for soon the sleeping creatures underneath came forth, and Kilroy proved to be greatly improved if still insufficient to assist his senior battle pets when the eldest monsters flocked forth from the shadowy depths. He bore the other heroes no true jealously at this point of his life, only a regret that he could not match their feats.

Nevertheless he joined the fight against the ferocious Temple Guardian itself, and his determination carried him through the seemingly endless battle far better than he could have ever dared against Marcel the Miser. It was this turning point where he and his owner began to realize the potential within Kilroy was awakening.

A glimpse of destiny

Only a few months after the matters beneath the Saherimos sands had settled down, the latest news out of Ziara City announced that Yun Enterprises had completed the Steamwork Cadogre schematics. It was an exciting prospect, and of course tragedy struck.

They accepted the Subetan Council's offer to join the Cruiseship Adventures like many others around the world, thinking to take a chance to relax and wind down for a month, as it would be years yet before they could afford the cost of a Yunium Key.

And as many now know, the creatures of the deep sea rose up to threaten all aboard.

Kilroy was but one of many who were taken during the tidal combat, dragged overboard by a dying kraken as his owner shouted in the pandemonium.

When, or if, they would ever be reunited again... remained uncertain.

Servant of the sea-witch

Though he had escaped the yoke of his true master and maker many years before, Kilroy could not avoid being captured and taken hostage by the vengeful sea-witch Merana in exchange for the leviathans he had slain. All too soon his structure and the internal failings that had always held him back despite his training were reshaped by her wicked will that he would better serve her purposes, just as easily as had Iltallo.

Warped into a Hydrus Cadogre instead of his dreamed of form, as he longed for the comfort of his owner and the home they had shared so long, his only hope lay in growing stronger, faster, enough so to break free of her vile tether.

Under the sea-witch's terrible ordeals Kilroy learned to combat the primordial elements, Slaglord, Surge, and Tortyrant. They beat him mercilessly for over a year until he could compensate, his abominable form straining the limits imposed upon him by Merana's awful magic in his desperate fury.

Only then did her own perfected pet, Daemon, make itself known as the unrivaled enforcer of her will, a check against Kilroy's ambitions.

As time eroded to a meaningless concept, the Cadogre began to lose sight of who he was. Battle day in and day out kept him strong, agile, yet never quite able to succeed while Daemon stood defiant and a constant reminder that there would always be one better than he.

At last a day came when Merana grew bored of Kilroy, and with a final stroke of cruelty, he was deployed against the fell spirit Kiyo, intended that he be destroyed once and for all now that her torments had grown stale, and an easy death by way of her favored pet would be too kind.

Yet her training had proven, against her intent, far more effective than she could have known. Two-hundred and forty-two times he rose and fell against the vengeful guardian of Shingui Guo, refusing to concede defeat while his will endured and strength yet flowed across his ravaged circuits. The magicks that had twisted his being granted him the energy to climb back to his paws, just as the belief of his owner, so long ago, had once driven him against his first rival.

Disgrace and woe

In the end, however, just as it had been years before against Marcel Martinez, even his determination could not withstand the fatigues of uttermost exhaustion, and those very magicks crumbled in the face of the supernatural being's vast and unlimited wroth. Kilroy's broken form joined the masses of owner-less-pets who had fought on wildly out of a sense of self-preservation.

Washed away into the mists and out into the waves, unfit even for Merana to resume torturing in such a state, as he lay there teetering upon the edge of eternity, whispering of his long-lost master whose name would no longer come forth to his fading mind, the collective regret of the other dead and dying creatures' bled into the Cadogre's shattered body and took up a malignant animus, crying out time and again - why? why must we die? why must we be deprived of the love shared by others?

What he had lost from the peoples of the Coda Caves and then Merana herself, he made up for with a haunted, ethereal presence. Reanimated over the following hazy nights not as a graveyard species, but instead the most dire beast, a Nightmare Cadogre, Kilroy crawled out from the seas one late, burning hour under the moon, to find himself - themselves - upon the jagged shores of Meneb.

If his first rebirth had come about at the hand of Shinwa, there could be no denying that this second renaissance was owed solely to the Dark Goddess herself, for there to greet him - them - and answer the inquiry throbbing in his - their - head and heart was her own favored Familiar waiting to bring Kilroy to the throne room whether he - they - willed it or not.

During the subsequent bitter combat Kilroy found himself - themselves - outmatched in sheer oomph, yet far superior in terms of agility. The cat-and-mouse game lasted for days as Kilroy struck with all that he - they - now possessed and endured retaliation, retreating and striking over and over again. Somewhere deep down beneath the instincts that drove him - them - to combat also whispered a quiet voice toward rebellion against the greater spirits the Cadogre now hosted.

In the end, as the third moon rose since they had met in clash, Kilroy dealt a conquering blow, and dragged himself - themselves - away from the wounded, yowling creature, staggering off into the dark mountains where lurked creatures of a certain Mad Scientist awaiting just such a vulnerable prey to sate their own twisted urges.

Champion of the night

Almost as soon as he - they - had entered the iron-rich, bleeding hills, Kilroy encountered the next threats in Daghraan and Javir, the dragons of the land. Under other circumstances such foes would have been no match for the Cadogre, but in the wake of such fierce combat against Maleria's favored pet, Kilroy stood greatly diminished. His - their - senses were flagging, leaving him - them - sluggish, vulnerable, and exhausted.

Yet beneath the weaknesses, a sterner, volatile core persisted. He - they - would not be subjugated, nor humiliated, ever again, despite the shortcomings of his - their - ravaged body.

The Cadogre met the challenge with a building fury. As claws and teeth tore at his dread aura and gouged at his frame, Kilroy responded in kind, leaving gaping wounds behind where scale and hide had not been enough to deter his gleaming cursed steel. As the draks bled, the Darkside soil drank richly, and the stones shifted that they might better afford more succor from the combatants, whereas the Cadogre only lost a dark ichor which cleared his - their - gaze a little more, and of which the land spurned.

When at last the ravaged beasts lay still, Kilroy ascended the vicious slope, seeking a cave to rest in. If only he - they - knew of what else was stirring, or that, from within her distant castle, the Dark Goddess watched from afar with a malicious slant to her cold features.
