It seemed so fragile, so left out in the open. But in truth the egg was no safer than the deserts of old. Predators dare not enter the territory of the Celestial Dragons. It was considered too dangerous to even attempt. The mother dragon nuzzled her egg. Soon it would be time for her to depart, for Celestial dragons only land in the desert to lay their eggs. Once the task is complete, they must return to the skies above, far beyond the reach of mortal touch.I never knew my mother. For as long as my kin has inhabited these lands, the Terracestials have protected us from the light-eaters. Since I was a hatchling, I wanted to be a part of the great army, to be able to protect my kin and all others from these huge beasts. The great den-dragon used to tell us of the light-eaters:
â When the world reached it's first century, all the creatures celebrated the longevity of the earth with a great song. It's sound reached around the sun, the moon and all other celestial beings. Everyone loved the world and it's song, except for three. See, we all chose to live in harmony and share the world. However, there were 4 that chose to live among the darkness and be without the rest of us. They coveted our life-force, our power and knowledge in our way of life. So they schemed to overthrow our leaders, and try to plummet the world into chaos.
Ail was the first to revolt against these evils, followed by Xou, and finally, Los. We know these as the light, the celestial, and the earth elementals. Together, they managed to form a seal and securely lock away three. However, the fourth chose to host itself in another body. They say it lies dormant within an old forest, far away from the eyes of the three.âž
I was afraid at first, for a dark forest lined the borders of our desert. I would not be able to escape their attack if the stories were true. For you see, I was born without the wings of my kin. Truth be told, I was born quite different than that of my brethren. At the end of my torso lies another head, rather than a tail. It's odd really, at first I thought I was twin minded.. alas the secondary head holds nothing but a second fire sac. Even with twice the fire power, hearing tales of such power scared me.At such a young age though, the only thing I could do would be to put my faith in our Den-dragon. The den-dragon was a great lumbering male that had watched over hatchlings for as long as anyone has remembered. He was big and burly, muscles rippled down his limbs and gave way at the torso. From there, two monstrous wings spread out for almost a mile. His face though.. His face was as kind and warm as a summer breeze. It made us all feel safe. We often spoke of his age, and the toll of the keeper it took him. He said that this would be his last keeper brood. The great sky called him home, and this time he could not deny it. I would miss him. When I was old enough, I was chosen to be the next den-dragon. Though my yearning for the stars surged through my veins, I couldn't help but think back to my den-dragon. He raised me, protected me, as a father would. I would not dare sully his image by rejecting my responsibilities now. Months went by, one by one I watched my kin spread their wings and grace the air with their presence. The sunset was always my favorite part however. The sunset danced off our skin, their wings, our hearts. Slowly, twinkling specks appeared across the sky, a canvas of blues, purples, orange, all sprinkled with dazzling, glittering stars. How I wished I could see it from up there..
