Once there was a strapping young lad named Merlot who liked to play in the heather. His father wanted him to help with the chores but the boy would steal away early in the morning and laze about all day. Then when the sun was laying down to sleep, he would come home and claim that he did not know his father needed help. His father could not bring himself to punish the boy since he had lost his mother at an early age. But each day, he promised himself that he would get up extra early each day and catch his son before he could get out of helping him. And each morning, he was so tired from the day's work, that he would oversleep and miss the boy. One such morning, the kid decided that he was tired of the heather and wanted to go somewhere new. He headed off to a forest by the edge of a gigantic lake. His dad would warn him to never go to the lake. He said it was very dangerous, but he would not say why. Today seemed like a good day to go there!

Merlot quietly crept close to the water's edge. He was brave but he was not altogether stupid. His face was reflected in the water. It was so clear and still...how could anything be wrong? He shimmied down to his underclothes and decided to swim in the cool water. He floated along peacefully, hardly making even a ripple in the water. Suddenly there was a shadow above him and his eyes flew open to see what was blocking the light. As he did this, he struggled to stand upright and almost took on too much water. Sputtering he looked up to see a squat, ugly troll with fluttering wings. He asked the creature its name and what it was doing here. The troll smiled. It looked as if he had fangs instead of teeth, but the smirk disappeared so quickly that it may have just been his imagination. It told the boy that he was just a wondering soul and that he wanted to help Merlot to have his deepest desire. The lad thought about it...surely this thing couldn't help him? But her told the troll that his biggest wish was to be a beautiful black horse so that he could run free and never have to worry about fleeing from his father's chores. The creature gave him a small seed and told him to put that in his food tonight and wait. He looked at the tiny man with a skeptical gaze and started to walk home. That night he did as told, but nothing happened so he went to sleep.

That morning he woke up and felt different. As he stretched and yawned, a loud noise came from his throat and the bed broke. He scrambled to his feet and realized that they were gone. His feet and hands had been replaced with hooves. He ambled over to his tiny dresser and looking glass. The troll had told the truth. He was a beautiful black horse. Meanwhile, he could hear his father stumbling in his room because of the noise that the boy had made. His dad opened the door and Merlot galloped past him, leaving the old man confused and frightened. He heard shouts coming from the house and all of the sudden felt a rope around his neck. His father had caught him and was pulling on the rope to stop him. So unaccustomed to his new form, his legs buckled and he fell to the ground. Before he could escape, his dad had him tethered to a nearby fence. This is not how he had imagined his first day of freedom.

Day after day, his father awoke early and tried to break in his new wild horse. But Merlot was a stubborn animal and would not do anything that he was told to do. And each night, the old man would go to bed weeping--not only because he could not train this magnificent creature, but also because he was mourning the disappearance of his son. After months of trying to break the horse, his father became frustrated and started to beat the horse when it was idle. Merlot cried out in anguish but his cries came out as neighs. Soon, the horse was so badly bruised and broken, that the old man decided that the work was not worth it. With a heavy heart, he lead the limping animal to town. Merlot thought that he was going to sell him. Maybe he would end up with a nice family with a little girl. It was not freedom, but it may be a peaceful life. But they were not heading towards the market...they were heading towards another part of town. This was not where he wanted to go, but he had no choice. His father was leading him to the slaughterhouse. It took a bit of haggling and polite conversation, but soon the old man left one horse lighter and 10 shillings richer. Poor Merlot ended up as glue in the end...free from doing his chores for his father and far, far away from the heather where he loved to play.
