Ryuzaki Shota. A boy of 16 years. He has no siblings, no mother, only a father. If you could even call him that. You see, his father is a bad person. He doesn't do anything, other than spend money and cause the occasional trouble. Always gambling, always drunk; so useless. Of course, his father wasn't always like this. He use to be such a nice guy, that is, until Ryuzaki's mother filed for a divorce.
His mother had left Ryuzaki and his father when he was only but the age of 10. She didn't want anything to do with the failure she married to. That's when Ryuzaki's father started getting rough. He lost his job, started gambling, started drinking, and started to take his anger out on Ryuzaki.
It's your fault! Your fault that she left! Your fault my life is so miserable, you good for nothing son! Those words were repeated every night to Ryuzaki while the beatings rained down on him, almost like it was some nightly ritual. He had always felt guilty. He truly believed it was all his fault. I deserve it, I deserve it. He never tries to resist every time his father slaps him across the face, kicks him in the ribs, gets tossed around like he was nothing. I deserve it.
No one knew what was happening. He wouldn't dare breath a word of this to anyone, not even his friends and classmates. They never noticed anything either. All the visible bruises and scars were nonchalantly excused for a fall down the stairs or a trip on a shoelace. And everyone believed him.
It was hard to think anything was going on when he seemed so happy all the time. He always put on a show of a happy boy, living happily with a oh so good father. But his eyes told a different story. But no matter... No one ever noticed anyways.
Ryuzaki is a pretty decent student. He is currently in his junior year of high school and has relatively good grades. He is known to be one of the nicest people in his whole school, and because of that, he is a bit popular with the ladies, as well as a few men. Who wouldn't like a nice and caring person?
As far as friends go, he has plenty. However he is not particularly close with them, mostly because of his father; he doesn't want anyone to know about him. The only person he actually trusts to confide in is Toshinori Seto. Ryu has known Toshi ever since kindergarten. Who would have thought the school's nicest person, Ryu, and the biggest jerk in school, Toshi, were best friends? Of course, no one actually knew that they were best friends, and they didn't mind. Toshi knows Ryu's situation at home and always tries his best to help him; whether it be just letting him stay over for the night, or even patching up a new injury. Whatever it was that Toshi did for him, Ryu was truly grateful for such a great friend.
Currently he works part time delivering newspapers in the wee hours of the morning before school, and after school he works as a bus boy for the local restaurant. The pay wasn't very much. But it was enough to pay for at least three meals a day for only one person, which was usually his father. However he does usually get at least one meal a day since his father was always asleep or out doing who knows what for the whole day. It was also enough to pay for the monthly rent for the dingy apartment where him and his father lives. Sometimes the landlady lets him pay the rent a little later when his father steals the cash he earns, and he was grateful for such a nice lady.
And so, this is the complicated life of Ryuzaki Shota. Can he keep living like this or will he break?
