And on to more important business...
Perseus wasn't always such a surly dude, in fact he started out as a perfectly sweet and friendly kitten....but all that changed when Miss Prissbottom found him as a stray outside her door and decided to take him in. Miss Prissbottom is an elderly lady from the good ol' Victorian times, who hasn't yet accepted that the world has evolved beyond tea scones and games of bridge. She lives in an old mansion in a quiet little town, all by herself. Perhaps it's because she's been alone for so long, without human companionship or anyone to talk to, that she's become a little...well.....unhinged some might say (others would use the term "batshit crazy" ). In any case, poor Miss Prissbottom has to resort to dressing up her poor cat in ridiculous outfits and having tea parties with him.
On rainy days, she reads him gushing poetry about lost love or tragic endings. When the sun is out, she puts poor Perseus in his stroller and wheels him up and down her lonely street. And every day, no matter the weather or her mood, she celebrates his birthday. One might say that she does it because she's simply barking mad and there's really no rhyme or reason to her fancies, but I think it's because she feels guilty for not knowing Perseus' real birthday (since she found him as a stray) and is afraid to actually miss it. So, every morning she bakes him a vanilla sponge cake with butter cream sugar roses, she puts out her best china, and she sings Happy Birthday while Perseus wears his silly hat and wishes she would.just.go.away.
While living in the old Victorian mansion in the quiet little town, Perseus made some friends. When he isn't being smushed and squished and poked and prodded and hugged and patted by Miss Prissbottom, Perseus likes to hang out with the Mice that reside in the attic. I know what you must be thinking, isn't a cat supposed to HUNT mice? Yea, supposedly. But Perseus is really a gentle soul, even though he pretends otherwise, and he wouldn't ever hurt a fly (except for that one time...but it was an accident, really!). The mice, lead by a plucky young lad called Napoleon, used to laugh at Perseus sitting on his ruffled cushion, with his lacey bonnet and ribboned tail, but ever since they realized just how miserable he was, they stopped tormenting him. They feel sorry for him, almost embarrassed, that a proud feline should be so disgraced. Aside from the daily birthday tradition, there's another ongoing event that Miss Prissbottom is blissfully unaware of. The plotting of Perseus' escape and Miss Prissbottom's demise!
Napoleon and his crew spend hours drawing up plans of the mansion, going over tactis, building various gadgets and gizmos that might aid in their plight, but it's all to no avail. For every night, Perseus and the mice concoct a clever scheme to poison the old lady or push her down the stairs, or cause her to accidentally electrocute herself, but every night their plans are foiled by their cluelessly ignorant victim. Every night, something goes wrong.Miss Prissbottom is one of those annoyingly lucky people to whom no harm can seem to come! Despite not knowing of these murderous plots, she always finds some way of surviving, much to the dismay of cat and mice. She usually finds Perseus out of his little kitty bed, and she drags him back upstairs where he is forced to spend the night silently cursing her under his breath. But they never give up hope. One day, Perseus will break free from that potpourri prison, take off his silly lace bonnet and not have to celebrate his fake birthday and eat his sugary cake and have to listen to that old bat recite her horrible poetry! A cat can dream.....
And we're almost done, I swear!
