~ Bloody Freedoms, Part I ~

=======================

Part of Silver knew what life meant before he died.

Part of him knew what it was like to love, to hate.

Part of his soul yearned for his former life . . . a life outside the eternal burning flames that trapped him . . .

----

Silver had a life once, or rather, half a life. Of course, he had never realized how split his life was until that fateful day, a long, long time ago.

Back then, he was known as Silver Storm, the mighty warrior of his clan. He was the strongest, the swiftest, and the bravest Endeavor in Rekyte, the territory which his clan controlled. His eagle eyes could see the farthest and he could cast his aura the greatest distance. Everyone looked up to him, and he could not travel without being praised. In fact, Silver Storm was beginning to get sick of all the compliments about his battle style. He was beginning to yearn for freedom.

Despite the constant praising, they had always called him an odd Endeavor, mostly because of his appearance. Silver Storm was bright orange, a color of orange even brighter than the Sun Endeavors in his clan. His armor also contained shining streaks of gray. Some called it beauty, but they mostly called it strange. The constant smell of death that seemed to flow from Silver Storm's armor did not help to improve his appearance.

In his clan, everyone helped each other. Their clan was close, and although Silver Storm was the mightiest warrior, he one day found himself being sent on a quest by the shaman elder. One of his clan members had fallen ill, and it was Silver Storm's mission to retrieve the rare matrix plant, which was only to be found in the Shadowlands.

Nobody ever dared to travel to the Shadowlands by themselves, as it was rumored to be filled with dark magic. So, on this day, Silver Storm called upon his good friend, MistsofDreams, to help him.

Although the Cadogres and the Endeavors had had constant battles in the past, the Storm clan and the Dream clan had always been friendly, and it was never surprising to see the two friends playing together.

In truth, Silver Storm had always liked Mists, because of the calming aura that Mists always seemed to have. Whatever Silver Storm could not talk about with his clan members, he could talk about with Mists. Mists understood him on a psychological level instead of a physical level, like most of his clanmates did.

On this particular day, Mists was quite pensive. He was beginning to talk about flying far far away to see new places. Silver Storm was starting to feel quite envious of Mists, because Mists was a free flyer. He could let the wind carry him wherever he wanted, and would never have to worry about any duties. Silver Storm, on the other hand, had more restrictions than he could count.

" Wouldnt it be wonderful to fly to new places? To dream under new stars?" Mists asked in his starry voice. " I would love to see what those stars are like up close."

" But Mists, what about me?" murmured Silver Storm. " You know that I cant leave this place."

Mists sighed. " And of course, I could never leave you."

They flew on in silence.

By the time that they reached the High Cliffs, they were both exhausted, so they decided to rest inside a cave. The cave had been rumored to have curses, but Mists and Silver Storm did not quite believe in such things. They settled down, and soon they were both asleep.

What happened next was something that Silver Storm could not quite comprehend. All he remembered was dreaming about flames. Burning, scorching flames that engulfed his soul.

When Silver Storm awoke, he felt as if he were floating. He was still in the cave, yes, but something was odd. He felt free, free at last. He did not feel tied down by the binds that were permanently woven to him by the Storm clans spells.

It did not occur to Silver Storm that he could no longer smell the scent of death that he always carried with him.

It was then that he heard a terrible wailing. A wailing that he had not heard in a long time, not since the Cadogre clan had lost Mists' mother. A wailing that spoke of loss, sadness, and torment.

Silver Storm looked around the cave, until his eyes found Mists, who was standing next to a rather odd looking rock. He was shouting at the starlit sky with tears running down his face.

" GIVE HIM BACK! I WANT MY FRIEND BACK! WHAT DID HE EVER DO THAT WAS WRONG?"

What in the world does he mean? Thought Silver Storm. He walked up to Mists and smiled. "Its okay, Mists. Nothing happened. Im right here, and I feel great!"

Mists did not stop crying. " GIVE HIM BACK! . . . I want my friend . . . He was the only family I had." Mists lowered his head, looked down at the rock, and then shouted " I SAID THAT I WOULD NEVER LEAVE YOU . . . so why did you leave me?"

Looking more closely at the rock, Silver jumped, as far as any spirit can jump.

He was looking at himself, and he was reduced to nothing more than an empty pile of armor. The armor had lost its orange sheen, and was reduced to the color of dusty gray.

Silver then heard Mists scream " IF YOU WONT GIVE HIM BACK, THEN ILL TAKE HIM FROM YOU!"

Before Silver could even move, Mists spread his wings and flew as fast as lightning into the sky. He flew at mach speed, until all Silver could see was a tiny speck in the sky, and soon not even that.

Feeling lost, Silver gazed at his abandoned body.

I wanted freedom, but not this; thought Silver, as sorrow filled his heart.

"Ah . . . be careful of what you wish for."

Silver turned, alert. "Who said that? . . . Who's there?"

" No-one. But yourself."

Suddenly, Silver felt flames, burning flames, all around him. The flames were trapping him, slowly encasing his body. Silver struggled, but the unimaginable pain was too much, and soon he could not move. The flames spread along his body . . . his wings, his tail, his claws, were completely enclosed.

" From this day, you will roam the world as SilverShiningCrane. Fear not, you cannot be seen by the eyes of normal Subetans, for you are just a spirit, reborn and freed from the life that you hated."

"Who ARE you?" SilverShiningCrane shouted.

"Me? I am you." From SilverShiningCrane's empty body arose a dark shadow. A shadow that felt like death and fear.

" From this day on, I will be known as Death Storm. I can still dwell in this world, for I am the part of you that was bound to this earth." snickered the shadow. "I can exist in the dreams of the innocent."

Without another word, the shadow glided out of the cave, leaving SilverShiningCrane in his flaming oblivion.
