The 13 year old neighbour and friend of Audrey, the words she would use to describe him include scared, nervous, frightened, cautious, and shy. He's non-magical (human) and the thing he hates most is being underestimated!

Information

The house next door was much like Grandfather's. It had the same shuttered windows. They were old but clean, and certainly functional, painted in a now-faded green. Audrey thought they might have once been a brilliant emerald, but still, they looked lovely even in their dull olive colour. In the summer, as it was now, the windows were all opened and sometimes Audrey could hear a woman singing as she did odd jobs, whatever they might have been.

Audrey imagined her own mother and thought that the woman might be just like her. She pictured a tumble of brown hair, kind blue eyes, and the smell of hyacinths mixed with home cooking.

Theodore's bedroom was on the second floor of the house. Audrey knew that because she could see him sat up there often, looking out the window or reading at a table that looked onto the back garden. He never played outside, though he must have seen Audrey out there.

It wasn't until one drizzly afternoon in the spring when she was stuck indoors that she heard anything interesting about the family next door. "Grandfather," Audrey began in earnest, "who is it that lives next door?"

Her grandfather was quick to tell her to avoid their closest neighbours. "Madame Dupont is a witch!" he declared in a solemn tone. "I'm most certain of that. Plus, she never goes to church on Sundays!" At that, he pulled a tight-lipped sort of face, frowning in a way that seemed most natural.

Audrey hated church on Sundays so she thought to herself - very quietly - that Madame Dupont had the right idea. All the same, she thought it best to follow her Grandfather's orders. At least he let her play in the garden, not like that Theodore Dupont sat all alone up in his bedroom all day. How miserable!
