Mina Rosaline Hartmann

Human, born 1988 in Westchester, New York, seamstress, knitter, community worker, sheltered.

It was practically a fairy tale romance when Rosaline Layton married Joseph Hartmann. The two had dated since their sophomore year in high school, and now that both of them had stable, well-paying jobs (a child physician and an architect, respectfully), it seemed only right that they settle down. Within the same year of their marriage, a baby girl, Mina, was born, and the two couldn't have been happier. For the first four years, things seemed to work out perfectly fine. But then everything took a turn for the worse when one day, while inspecting one of his latest designs, a faulty support beam had collapsed, bringing the structure down upon Joseph and several construction workers. Only one worker managed to survive the incident. Grieved by her husband's death, Rosaline refused to eat or go outside, unless for job purposes. In time, her health began to deteriorate. Despite the warning signs and the pleas from co-workers and loved ones, she just couldn't help herself. Rosaline was just too upset by Joseph's death to notice that something was wrong with her until it was far too late. Within just a few weeks of her husband's accident, she too had died, the cause of death being a broken heart.

Immediately after the deaths of her parents, Mina was taken in by her grandmother, Hanna, who did absolutely everything possible to make her little granddaughter happy again after all the trauma she had seen in a mere matter of weeks. No matter how much she coaxed the little girl, she just couldn't open up. Desperate to have her granddaughter's spirits lifted, she handed her a pair of her spare knitting needles, and a ball of wool. With this, she began teaching her to knit, and, despite her young age, Mina showed an aptitude for it that would rival several who had practiced the art for years. Pleased with finally finding a way to focus on something other than the recent tragedies, Hanna sought other creative outlets for her granddaughter. She took Mina with her to her tailor shop one day, and showed her what she did for a living. Seeing the little girl intrigued by the craftsmanship her grandmother placed in all the fine clothes she produced, Hanna made Mina make a promise to her that day; if she could learn to let go of her personal losses and focus more on the positives in life, she would not only teach Mina to sew equally beautiful clothes, but she would also leave her the shop when she passed on. From that day on, Mina stopped grieving over her parents and instead focused on ways she could remember them by. Within a month after learning to knit and sew, she had created a beautifully made quilt, which she decided she would keep as a reminder that, no matter what happened earlier in her life, she could overcome the struggles and do something great. Other children at school soon asked her to sew them personalized plushies, and had gotten so well at it, that people were even paying her commission for her work. As she grew older, she even started making costumes for school plays and community theater companies. And when her grandmother decided her cousin, Milan, was better off living with the two of them, she helped him get his first job by having him deliver some of her orders. And at long last, when Grandma Hanna had finally passed away from old age, she remained true to her word and left Mina the tailor shop in her will.

Recently, in honor of what her grandmother helped her through, she had legally changed the shop name from "Sew Beautiful" to "Hanna's". Nowadays, Mina spends her life delved into her work. She couldn't be happier, making an honest living by doing what she loves. To some, she's a fragile thing, sheltered from life's true harshness, and is accused regularly of seeing things "through rose-tinted glasses". But Mina feels that's probably the best way anybody could describe her. She never lets trivial or even deeply serious troubles get in the way of her day-to-day life, because she knows clinging to such things will only result in gloom. She hopes that someday, people will see this and follow her example, but remains satisfied with the way things are.
