"In the flush of love's light, we dare to be brave. And suddenly we see that love costs all we are and we will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free."

Songs and tales in old Greece tell of a young man named Hyacinth. Hyacinth was a beautiful youth, with wild golden locks, amber eyes and he was loved and admired by all who laid eyes on him. Young maidens envied and adored him, poets wrote songs about him and kings and queens offered him all their gold if he stayed at their side. The young man even caught the attention of two gods: god of the west wind, Zephyr and the radiant sun god Apollo.

His beauty caused a feud between Zephyr and Apollo, and Hyacinth enjoyed their numerous attempts to charm him. But eventually it was Apollo who captured his heart. The couple’s devotion for each other became known in both the realm of humans and gods, and their love was beyond compare.

But neither of them realized how jealousy can even make the purest of hearts turn black and fil it with incredible hate. Zephyr couldn’t take it that Hyacinth chose Apollo over him. If he couldn’t have Hyacinth, no one could. In his jealous rage Zephyr sought out the two lovers.

Unaware of the danger, Apollo and Hyacinth were enjoying a game of discus throwing. The two were so caught up trying to impress each other that neither of them noticed the enraged Zephyr hiding nearby. When Apollo threw his discuss Zephyr blew it off course, straight towards Hyacinth. The discuss hit the young man and he was killed instantly.

Apollo rushed toward his love hoping it was not too late to save him. But as he held Hyacinths lifeless body and realized he was gone, Apollo was overcome with grief. Unaware that it was not he but Zephyr that had caused the discus to blow of course. The god wouldn’t allow the underworld to take his love and sought a way to keep him in the world of men forever. From Hyacinths spilled blood Apollo created a beautiful flower, and his tears stained the newly formed flower's petals with the sign of his grief. He named this flower after Hyacinth and planted them across the human world so his lover will never be forgotten. Today these flowers still bloom when the first rays of sunlight come to greet them in spring ♥️
