Information
Prior to China adopting Buddhism as its largest religion, China had its own mythology as well. This mythology still features prominently in Daoist beliefs and in WuXia (武俠)novels, movies, and television dramas.
Daoist and folk beliefs in Chinese mythology state that the heavens are ruled by the Jade emperor(玉皇) who presides over all the gods and goddesses that comprise what is known as the Jade Court. Gods, such as Yue Xia Lao, 月下 老(the old man in the moon, the matchmaker god) are part of the Jade Court. Nuwa (女媧), the mother goddess that presides over earth and humanity itself, is another goddess that is also part of the Jade court.
Depictions of Nuwa in Chinese mythology usually show her as half human female-half serpent. She is the goddess that in Chinese mythology created humans and protects them, presiding over the earthly realm and protecting it from harm. She is also one of the oldest deities in Chinese mythology as, many scholars believe that her existence and belief in her likely pre-dates that of the Jade Emperor and the Jade Court.
She existed at a the beginning of the world, along with her husband Fuxi. The story is that while Nuwa lived in a world filled with an abundance of beauty, she felt lonely and so, in order to create companions for herself, she created animals. On the first day she created chickens, the second she created dogs, the third sheep, the fourth pigs, the fifth cows, and the sixth horses, but she was still lonely so, on the seventh day she picked up a handful of yellow clay and from the clay molded a figure in her likeness. That figure became the first human. She created more figures, both male and female and her loneliness was abated. She also dipped a rope in the clay mud and swung it around her, with each of the lumps of mud becoming different humans. The handmade clay figurines she made became the wealthy and the lumps of mud, the peasants.
Another further myth talks of her saving humanity from a great calamity. The gods of water( Gong Gong) and fire(Zhu Rong) had a great fight and fought all the way from heaven to earth, causing great destruction in their wake. Gong Gong, when he saw he was losing, smashed his head against Mount Buzhou, (不周山), a mythological mountain peak that served as a pillar to hold up the sky. The location of Mount Buzhou is believed to have been northwest of the Kunlun range in southern Xinjiang. The pillar collapsed from the impact of his head hitting it,and "half the sky fell in, the earth cracked open, forests went up in flames, flood waters sprouted from beneath the earth and dragons, snakes, and fierce animals leaped out at the people. Many people were drowned and more were burned or devoured."( http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Nuwa).
Nuwa, saddened by the suffering befalling her creations decided to find a way to mend the sky and stop the destruction caused by the fight between the two gods. She melted five elemental stones and used the molten mixture created to patch up the sky. She also killed a turtle and used each of the turtle's four legs as pillars to hold up the sky. She slayed a dragon scaring the various attacking beasts away from the land of Qi, and lastly, she burned a large amount of reeds and used the ashes to stop the floods from spreading and thus, saved the human race from destruction.
