About

Name: Mana

Age: Perpetually 16

Orientation: Unsure

Occupation: Sole resident of the gap between time and space

Appearance: Mana is a wisp of a girl, willowy and slim at 5’6” tall. Her skin is a caramel brown tinged with an ashen gray undertone, darkest under her eyes where it deepens and mixes with a spattering of freckles. Mana’s hair is cut angularly and swept to the left, the rest tucked behind her ear, a vibrant plum in color. Her eyes fade between an unnatural ultraviolet and ice-blue, her sclera coal-black and devoid of light. Mana wears a simple outfit of a shirt, sweater, and stockings in shades of purple and violet, with a black skirt and shoes and a layered necklace of blue crystal droplets. Her appearance and age never change, frozen since her death and resembling what she last looked like before falling ill.

Personality: Full of boldness and brightness, Mana was an unstoppably curious and energetic child from a young age. Opposite to her twin sister, Mana often dragged Cry into many imaginary games and adventures. She learned to appreciate simple pleasures and find joy around many corners. Through school she was very sociable and enjoyed making a great many friends, but always returned to Cry’s side to support her first and truest friend. Without many material possessions at their disposal, Mana buried herself in books at the library and was known to soak up knowledge like a sponge. She also asked many, many questions, much to the chagrin of those around her, especially her teachers. With a bright future at her disposal, Mana’s life being cut short dimmed her optimism and forced her to withdraw, becoming a bitter, pensive person after her death. Left with more questions than answers and being stuck alone in a place she knows nothing of, Mana often lets her emotions get the best of her. The times Mana does manage to break through to her sister’s world, she is left feeling empty, a cycle of momentary relief before loneliness and frustration sets in. Her determination has only gotten stronger to escape from what she considers to be a neverending prison.

Abilities: Being stuck in a space-time realm that Mana knows little about, she has very little control over the plane she now exists in. All that Mana has deduced is that she is the only person who has been able to reach it, that it is endless, and that the flow of time physically wraps through and around it. She knows that she can ‘push through’ in a sense when she lets herself meditate and focus solely on her sister. For a limited time, she is able to see and hear in the mortal plane again, appearing as fireflies around Cry and with the ability to speak telepathically with her twin. With enough emphasis she can use kinetic force in short bursts, particularly when upset, which has become a point of contention between Mana and her sister. Too much use of these abilities knocks Mana out for awhile, needing to recover. These small tears she creates in her dimension have caught the attention of another person who is acutely attuned to shifts in the flow of time. The two see flashes of each other in visions, not knowing who the other is but understanding that their connection has a larger purpose they have yet to uncover.

Story

Fraternal twin to her sister Cry, Mana grew up raised by her grandparents, rarely if ever seeing her parents. Quite content with her life regardless, she knew her early years as full of love and warmth despite little financial means. She spent a lot of time outside playing and making up fun activities to do with her sister. In school Mana thrived, a good student that worked hard to maintain her grades and with dreams to someday give back, help others, and make a difference in the world. Mana wasn’t sure just how she would do that - maybe as a doctor, a lawyer, a scientist or engineer - but she was excited to find her calling someday, and make her sister proud.

Shortly after the new year when Mana was sixteen, she began losing energy, tired and worn down by some kind of illness that she couldn’t get over. When it lingered and she got worse, doctors found the cause wasn’t just a passing flu bug, but something much worse. Diagnosed with leukemia, she was quickly put into treatment to stop the disease’s progression and put her in remission. Mana was in and out of hospitals for a year and a half, improving at first but soon finding her symptoms worsening and treatment becoming less effective. Mana did her best to keep positive throughout her illness, especially for Cry’s sake, assuring her that she would be back in school and home in time for dinner any time.

Mana didn’t know exactly when it happened, but she knew that six weeks after she and Cry turned seventeen things blurred, and she was suddenly gone. She had made peace with what might have come, but she hadn’t expected death and the afterlife to suddenly thrust her into something so inexplicable. Mana didn’t know what to call the broken space, with the flow of some kind of energy wrapped through it and reaching out like tendrils. It felt like some kind of dumping ground for pieces of memories and fractions of places that once was. Sometimes it showed her memories, and at times those visions came with voices. A voice - one Mana recognized well.

Not knowing just how long she had been there, Mana realized those memories were dreams, and that voice was her sister. Mana held onto those wisps of something and found that if she concentrated hard, she could get through the dreams and actually speak to Cry. That with enough willpower, she could see through Cry and force her way into the world again in bursts of energy. She was happy that she could be with her sister somehow, if only once in awhile, and that gave Mana enough of a reason to try for more. Mana would find a way to fully break free and find her way back to Cry.
