The Son of the Sun

The creature lands directly on the sun's surface. It is something unimaginable by the present-day Earthlings; they can barely look at the sun directly without having to squint their eyes or look away seconds later. But due to his birth through one of the sun's very own solar flares, Caydan is part of the sun. He carries the brilliant flares of the sun with him and is as comfortable standing on the surface as the Earthlings are walking on their own planet.

But this is long before Earthlings first made an appearance on Earth. In fact, Caydan was completely oblivious of life in the black void. He only had extreme pride in the bright star that he called 'home' and it was his duty to protect the sun. He often inspected any sun spots that appeared on the surface and checked any solar flares to see if another creature would be born from them. Most of the time, however, he simply enjoyed travelling to the nearest rock that orbited around the sun and viewed the bright star from afar, which is exactly what he was doing at the moment.

While enjoying the view of the sun, something caught his attention and he whipped around. He was shocked to see another creature that looked very similar to him; the only difference was that she wore lightning bolts around her cloudy tail and her fur shined brilliantly like the stars scattered around the black void. His first instinct was to stand his ground and protect the sun, but she appeared awe-struck and said, "You carry the flares of the sun." This was when Caydan realized she was not a threat and backed down slightly. "Indeed, the name is Caydan. And you wear stars of the void."

The female blinked. "I was born from the Canis Major constellation. My name is Chelsea, and this 'void' you speak of is the solar system."

Caydan cocked his head to the side. "The 'solar system'?"

He regretted saying that when shock consumed Chelsea's face. "The solar system is your home!"

"My home is the sun."

"The sun may have given birth to you, but the solar system is the sun's home, making it your home as well. Just like how the Canis Major gave birth to me, but its home is the solar system as well as mine." She paused for a moment and then said, "Mercury."

Caydan was confused. "What?"

"This 'rock' that you are standing on is actually a planet named Mercury. I bet you did not know that, did you?" Caydan looked down at the surface below his feet. He hated to admit that she was right; he assumed that this was just a rock. He had no idea that it had a name or a purpose. "And to think, as my job to keep the entire solar system in balance and inspect every inch of it, I am unable to get any closer to the sun than Mercury due to its temperature. I envy that you can walk on its surface, but now I realize that your ego is just as hot as the sun is."

Minutes ago, Caydan, the sun, and the other stars were the only forms of life in the black void. Now he is confronted by another creature of his kind and has learned that there is more to this void than he knew of. The words of the creature were harsh and he felt humiliated. But she was right. He was only concerned about the sun and himself and he never bothered to leave his home to discover what the black void--the solar system--had in store. He looked back up to Chelsea. "Teach me," he says. "Teach me the ways of the solar system."

Chelsea stared at Caydan long and blankly, as if she was considering it. Finally, she spoke, "I will do more than just teach you. I will show you." Without looking behind her, Chelsea left Mercury's surface and went deeper into the solar system. Caydan followed closely in pursuit.

The journey of the solar system was incredible. Caydan got to see the red surface of Mars, the Great Red Spot of Jupiter. the rings of Saturn, the asteroid belt, planets, comets, constellations, moons--just about everything. But the most incredible was Earth. This planet was filled with life. Creatures known as dinosaurs scoured the surface. Water flowed through rivers, streams, and the ocean. Tall, brilliant green trees covered the land. He experienced colors that he had never seen before. It was incredible. And to think, Caydan only cared about the sun. There were so many other great things that the solar system had to offer.

Caydan finishes up his inspections of the sun. He greets the little critters that were born from smaller solar flares, much like himself, but are too weak to travel far from the sun's hot temperature. Upon completion, he makes his way to Mercury. As expected, Chelsea is already on the planet awaiting his arrival. "How is the sun?"

He licks his mate on the forehead in greeting before answering. "Still in perfect condition. Nothing is out of the ordinary." The report makes Chelsea smile. "Any news on the Earthlings?"

Now Chelsea frowns. Out of everyone who takes care of the solar system, Chelsea is the one to strongly dislike the Earthlings. "Who cares? You know I haven't touched Earth's surface since they first began appearing. From Lorenzo's inspection, they are the same."

Caydan chuckles at her annoyance. "Come on, I think we are long overdue for a date travelling through the solar system." This makes Chelsea perk up and they both leave Mercury's surface to venture the solar system, together.
