How could a magical world exist without magical girls to protect it? Right. It couldn’t. It would collapse into chaos and be swallowed by the creeping dark mist. And that’s exactly what happened to the land of Aur’an, at least until the high mages at Vernal Halls Academy stepped in and created four guardian dolls, one for each cardinal direction. Each one forged around a different magical gemstone core.

That’s how Ruby, the South’s guardian, came into being: Wavy white hair. Porcelain skin. Ruby-red eyes. And a beauty so pristine it almost conceals the sharpness in her gaze. She speaks softly, walks without rush, and works almost never, preferably never. Why would she, when she can get other people to do the job for her? The South is vast and wild, and that work-life balance thing is important, and as an immortal guardian, life is long, so it should be enjoyable. So Ruby, being the innovator she is, took a different approach from her fellow guardians: delegation.

She founded the Treehouse Café, a place where the wandering, the bored, and the questionably sane could gather, enjoy some pastries, and check the board near the door to see if any village needs help handling some deadly magical crises. Ruby denies it being an adventurer’s guild flavoured as a café, but... it’s pretty much an adventurer’s guild flavoured as a café. And these days, locals just call her Granny. She says it’s not her cup of coffee, but considering she helped raise most of the local villages, their children, and their children’s children, the title fits like cherries on vanilla cake.

When she is not resting in her room, she reads requests, assigns jobs, and distributes payment with all the solemnity of someone deciding who should take out the trash. She also enjoys sitting at the customer’s tables to give them advice no one asked for. Those pesky kids, what would be of them without her guidance?

Though rarely seen in battle, her magical prowess is as great as her refusal to leave her cozy domain. She casts spells through enchanted knitting needles, and commands an army of gun-wielding teddy bears she knit herself. Despite her laziness and questionable work ethic, her systems work. Her adventurers mostly survive. And her café stays open.

Beneath the lazy doll, lies a magical guardian who truly believes in the people she refuses to babysit. Maybe a little tough love and hot coffee was all they ever needed after all.
