to be darkmatter

He was surprised he was still aware enough to feel pain. By the amount of liquid he could feel sticking to his skin and clothes he thought surely he should be dead. Yet rather he continued to draw rattling breaths into broken lungs. He had long lost his voice to his screams yet his cracked lips continued to mouth please like a prayer, as if it was the only word he had left. The shackles around his limbs were tight enough to cut to the bone and each new cut or slice sent pain along his heightened nerves, the movement causing the rusted metal to carve a little deeper into the marrow.
The men continued to walk around him and whisper words that sounded vile to his ear, while outside the thunder boomed and the wind howled. It seemed to increase with every new sentence that dripped from their tongues.

“Jakoub!” His eyes shifted, a blurred image standing in the doorway. Aurorain… Tears came to his eyes unbidden and with everything in his soul he screamed for her to flee. Yet within his heart he cried for release.
“It is too late, woman! The rites have been read and our power shall be overwhelming!”
“In every dimension, monsters like you infest it! You shall suffer for this!”
“Too late!” They cried as one and lifted their hands over him. His blood glowed around him and he let out a scream as excruciating pain rushed through him as if his entire being was being pulled apart molecule by molecule. Then the pain blissfully stopped as black smoke rose from the blood. “We have called you back here, offering blood, flesh, and bone! We request you bestow your power upon us so that we may bring the world you and your people strived to create!” The creature that formed before them was sketal in appearance, bones sticking out of skin stretched too tightly across rotted flesh.

You bring me here to beg for power and expect me to believe you have the strength to make our world a reality?” It laughed and Jakoub felt chilled by the sound. It was just so cold. The creature suddenly shrieked and he caught Aurorain dive down. Light exploded around him yet rather than be blinded, he was able to see more clearly and he watched as the claws of the creature sliced into the men around him methodically. Rather than blood however it was gray aura that was ripped away from them, their faces turning gaunt and skin paling. Aurorain gasped as the ground cracked under her and he desperately called her name as she disappeared along with half of the floor. The creature scoffed as the remaining men toppled to the ground.
“They offered neither power nor did they fully restore me. What good are our followers now?” Jakoub stiffened as it turned towards him, crimson eyes catching him in their brutal and inhuman gaze.
“What are you?”
“It matters not. You may simply know me as Arwen.” Jakoub stumbled back then froze as he realized the motion and his eyes jerked down. His hands were see through and he let out a cry as he saw his body staring brokenly up at him.
“I… I'm…”

“It is a shock for all.” The creature said uncaringly as it floated towards the window.
“What are you doing?” He demanded, seeking in vain any different subject than that of his death. What was he now? A ghost? A ghoul?
“I need more power. I have not yet crossed fully into this world. I need to siphon the life force of those I sense to open the gateway.” Jakoub’s breath caught and he slowly looked towards his body. He could barely even tell the corpse was human, much less his and a sob threatened to choke him.
No.
He could never let that become of anyone else.
“I won't allow it!” Jakoub snarled as he reached towards it. He froze as Arwen turned towards him, eyes flashing savagely.
“What will you do?” It gestured to his body. “As long as I use your body as an anchor, nothing will keep me from my goal. I will come fully into this world and remake it into what it has always wanted to be.” Arwen curled its fingers and Jakoub gasped as the floor cracked and heaved. It broke apart under his body, sending the corpse crumbling down the tower. “As long as part of your body remains here I will remain tethered. I wonder,” its bloodless lips twisted hatefully. “With how many cuts if it'll be able to actually stay together or if you will be scattered across these floors.”

Jakoub breathed heavily, eyes burning and he couldn't even think how he was still able to cry as a ghost. Yet he couldn't allow that thing to roam and as he looked at the hole he could only pray that Aurorain was safe, and that she found his body to end this before it started.
“I won't let you!” He repeated and leapt towards the twisted creature. If he was to be bound by this creature, trapped between these worlds he had to make sure no one ever suffered the same.
Even if it took all the rest of whatever life or soul he had left, then so be it. Anything to keep his thoughts off what he'd become, and prevent it from happening to another.

Oh someday I hope I'll make it out of here
even if it takes all night or 100 years
