Dog of Thunder
Rexius raced towards the marble steps, his fur on edge with static electricity. He paused at the base, catching his breath. A vital objective lay before him, and here is where he would find his first clue. He climbed the staircase, a figure dressed in white silks coming into view. She sat in the center of the barren room; her eyes rose to meet him. She was beautiful, though her expression were downtrodden.
"You are on a mission, aren't you, dear wolf?"
Rexius sat before her calmly, peering into the woman's sad eyes.
Do not lose hope, Cassandra.
Cassandra turned her face aside, looking towards the horizon. She swept a stray strand of dark hair out of her face.
"They won't listen to me, dear wolf. They chase me from the streets, call me a liar. They are beginning to think me mad!"
The poor girl began crying. Rexius stood and circled around her before laying at her feet. There was nothing he could do but offer his silent support. He had once tried convincing the mortals of Cassandra's truthfulness, but it was an impossible task. A moment passed before Cassandra spoke once more, after a small sniffle.
"Enough about me. You are busy, are you not? What you seek lies where there are two faces, where the beginning meets the end."
Cryptic it seemed, but Rexius knew that she spoke rather literally.
Janus.
Cassandra nodded before standing, shaking the dust from the hem of her silks.
"Be safe, dear wolf. I must return to the city. I must try again."
Rexius nodded, standing to pace to the edge of the steps before glancing back.
Keep your head up, Cass.
Cassandra nodded, raising one hand in farewell as she strode the opposite direction. Rexius looked before him, knowing now where he had to go. He readied himself, blue jolts of electricity forming at the pads of his paws, circling around his ankles. He suddenly leapt with great speed, bounding into the sky. He raced through the clouds, a trail of lightening following his steps as he admired the scenes pass below him.
Eventually he softly landed in the center of the Temple of Doorways, where Janus presided. Janus appeared immediately, revealing his form to Rexius. Janus was two-faced: one young masculine head facing to the East, and one mature weary head facing to the West. Janus could see it all, the Past and the Future; the beginning and the end.
"It leaves it's mark."
The two heads spoke with one voice. Did he speak of the past, or the future? Rexius looked around, seeing no immediate sign that what he sought was once here. Each of Janus' center eyes focus on Rexius, an otherworldly expression that set him on edge. Janus was harmless, certainly, but Rexius always found something off-putting about him.
Any other way you can help me?
The two mouths opened, paused and gasped before speaking simultaneously.
"Your games amuse me, your games tire me. You listen for the cries."
Janus left, then; at least, concealing his presence from Rexius. Rexius looked at the dozen doors around him, his ears perked up with alert listening. Through two portals a cry could be heard; one of a child's, the others of a man. Rexius trotted to the portal that echoed with the child's voice, and stepped through the gaseous barrier.
Rexius stood in a field, a barren farmland. At the end of the field was a barn, alight with a great flame. A young girl kneeled against a fence post nearby, sobbing. Rexius approached her, recognizing her frantic prayers between her sobs. Rexius looked towards the burning barn before emitting a sharp, long howl. The girl startled, turning to look towards Rexius. The world seemed to respond in like; the wind sang it's own howl, the sky cracked and thundered and growled. A quick sprinkling quickly elevated to a downpour. The girl breathed a small sigh of relief, as she watched the fire dissipate. Perhaps not all had been lost. It was a minuscule comfort, but a comfort nonetheless. The girl turned towards Rexius. A human, a mortal; she would only see a dog. She kneeled down and hugged him, sniffling back her sobs.
Follow me to safety.
Rexius stood and walked a few steps away. Mortals tended to be bad of hearing, so he tilted his head and attempted to signal for her to follow. She was a smart girl, and obeyed. Rexius followed the scent of others and led her to the edge of the nearest town. Someone who seemed to recognize her came running out to greet her. Within the commotion, Rexius slipped away. He was glad that he had stepped through that portal, but it had turned out to be the wrong one. With a determined step, Rexius returned to the Temple of Doorways. The air hung heavy; a sign that Janus did not feel like entertaining guests. Rexius rushed through the alternative portal, this time ending up atop a tower, alongside a great wall that surrounded a bustling city. What seemed to be one man's crying was in fact two men, arguing loudly, their emotions risen.
"For the last time, there were six birds, Romulus!"
The first man shouted, slamming his hand against the stone.
The second man shook his head, turning aside pointedly.
"There were double that many, Remus! Have you gone blind?"
Remus growled, waving his hands angrily as he spoke.
"You are incompetent in augury! You wouldn't count those six that landed-"
Romulus growled equally in return, stepping threateningly close to his brother.
"So you admit, before they landed, they were twelve!"
Rexius paced the room, initially ignoring the men. They were known for their disagreements, and frankly Rexius was not in the mood. However, when he saw no hint of where to go next, he found that he had to speak up.
Ahem. May I interject?
Remus immediately glanced over, opening his arms in a welcoming gesture.
"Surely! You must have come to tell my brother what a fool he is. Come now, I'm right, am I not?"
Romulus shoved his brother, pointing towards Rexius.
"Your asking the dog to perform augury for you?"
Remus opened his mouth to debate, but Rexius interrupted.
Have you seen my Master's creation around here?
Romulus glanced over the city, pointing to the town center.
"It landed there, for sure."
Remus shook his head, pointing past the city walls.
"You are directing him the wrong way. It landed out there."
The brothers began debating once more, their voices raising higher as they sought to out-volume their opponent. Rexius flicked his tail, annoyed. Following his instinct, he bolted in the direction Remus had pointed. Sure enough, past the hilly dunes, was a sign of what he sought; a tree split down the center. Rexius investigated the area, his nose twitching with eagerness. Yes! It was surely here. He began digging at the dead wood, until a golden shimmer caught his eye. He dug a little more before grasping the grand prize, a special electric bolt created in solidity by his beloved Master. It pulsed with raw power, with importance. At last, his journey had come to fruition. Achievement renewed his vigor, and Rexius bolted faster than before into the skies, eager to return home.
He proudly approached his Master, his mother, Fulgora. With great pride and honor, he brought the bolt before her, kneeling as he dropped it. Fulgora beamed with pleasure, her joy emanating in waves. She praised Rexius exuberantly, gave him several pats, and with barely a pause, threw the bolt once more.
"Retrieve it for me, Rexius!"
Strange behavior, perhaps, but Rexius didn't mind. He was honored to be chosen once more for another grand mission. He wagged his tail and smiled at Fulgora before turning to bolt after the prize.
