So here's the deal: I'm kinda obsessed with charcuterie boards at the moment. Like watching YouTube videos at 3 am on a weekday obsessed. Stalking the deli section every time I enter the grocery store levels. It's an entire thing for me and I've wanted to make it more accessible so more people can enjoy it, too.

From my special interest de jour to you.

I'm no expert, but I'm gonna break down some options and my philosophy behind why charcuterie can be easier and more affordable than you think!

I know, I know. Before we dive in I just wanna say I'm on your side--I sure as hell don't have $150 to spend on a single meal. Or at all most cases! I'm also tired of seeing articles talk about charcuterie boards for under $10 only to have them twist the math. Yes—technically—it is only $1 of Parmesan cheese if you buy a giant 10 pound wheel and use an ounce of it. (Don't check my math—that's another reason I'm not gonna split hairs over cost.) But that's not realistic.

I'd love to live in whatever world they're thinking of. Just walk up to a cashier with a loose handful of dried fruit and go "Just this please! The rest of the bag? Don't worry about it!"

But jokes aside, I'm here to give some options and tell you how I do things. You don't need to make an ordeal out of it.

I actually got into it when I was on SNAP (food stamps) for the first time after losing my job a few years ago. I denied myself a lot of things to cut costs. But after I happened to see the artisan cheese section at my grocery store sold leftover cuts for under $5, I decided to make a small exception.

After months and months of denying myself, it felt revolutionary to carve out a space of pure enjoyment.

That's what it's about to me, and what I want to pass on to you.And honestly, it doesn't take much to elevate the basics to something truly decadent. It's the little celebrations of flavor that really count.

What you should focus on is contrast and harmony. Remy from Ratatouille really was onto something—cheddar cheese and grapes are delicious together!

Consider the rich flavor of salami and compare that with the smoothness of gouda cheese. How would that differ from sharp cheddar? What if you combined ham, nuts, and dried cherries? Which would you like better on a cracker: strawberries and brie, or cream cheese and chives?

There's no right or wrong answer, of course. What matters is trying something new and the delight that comes with it.
