Telamon, the Blacklight Irion

During the war, he had kept his feathers and fur pure black, without a hint of colour allowed. He always flew at night, hidden in the dark, a shadow in a world full of shadows. His eyesight was exemplary, he could spot a Wyllop in a cornfield from 3500ft, and his speed meant none of his targets ever escaped him. At first, he had been proud of what he could do, often thwarting the plans of his country’s enemies. As the war went on, he struggled with doubt, pain, loneliness, and fear. He found he could no longer be proud of what he was doing, and by the end, he could only just accept that it was necessary, but it was also wrong. He had never wanted to harm another being, but on the fateful day the invasion began, he knew he would have to, if he were to be able to defend his home. And, he did. Too many times for his broken heart to handle, he did.

It had taken many years of therapy before he began to see a shade of his old self come back into his eyes, and more before he learned to accept what he had done to save his people. He kept the black fur of his former life as a reminder, but now, he was able to let himself have colour as well. He learned again how to laugh, and how to fly free, without his scout training analysing everything he saw. His Irion grin slowly began to show more and more, and his feathers were painted with rainbows and light, moving at last from the dark in his soul, into the sun again..
