A river goddess of fertility and plenty, Hat-Mehit’s worship was considered the foremost of the relatively rare fish cults of ancient Egypt. The patron of fishermen, a shrine to Hat-Mehit has been discovered, located near an ancient harbor. Stela decorated with fish and jars of mummified fish offered to Hat-Mehit have been found.
The ancient Egyptians wore fish amulets to prevent drowning, especially children. Fish amulets were also exchanged during the New Year for good luck. The heart was likened to a "red fish swimming in a pond," and Hat-Mehit was invoked to protect it.
Hat-Mehit’s husband was thought to be Banebdjedet. Sometimes she was considered to be the mother of Horus.
