Holland exists outside of the storyline that the rest of my pets are in

In Michigan there is a little town called Holland. In that town there is a little girl who was born in the nineties who plays hockey. It is 2003. She is obsessed with all things Lisa Frank. Her notebooks, her folders, her pencils, her collectible erasures, her coloring books, her school backpack... all Lisa Frank. She loves all animals in general but especially horses. Riding lessons have been out of reach for her family, but hockey - that she could start through the sports center that her dad's job supplies. When she was little, she would go skiing with her dad, but now she has more little siblings and ski trips are more complicated. She's always been a winter sports girl - she's obsessed with the Olympics. Her parents taped Picabo Street's final downhill run so that she would go to bed on time. Skiing isn't an option, horses aren't an option, she did ballet for a few years and got bored. But hockey! She's only recently discovered hockey - she's been playing for two years now. She's getting better at it, and her dad has started watching fewer football games, more hockey games. She's checked out all of the books that the library has on hockey. She's done multiple school presentations on hockey. She already knows that she wants to go to Wayne State University because they're the only Michigan university with a NCAA program. She has posters of Shelley Looney and Lisa Brown-Miller hung in her room, as well as a photocopy of a picture of Karen Koch.

Her team has both girls and boys playing together - there wouldn't be enough of them to form separate teams. They're just learning, it's just for fun - but her parents have started looking for a school with a hockey rink, since it seems that this is not a passing passion. The kids trade stick wrapping techniques. They rib each other about boys or girls being better, and gossip about who likes who. She participates even though she doesn't really understand the point. She has best friends who are boys, and she always has, so she feels like she's betraying them if she joins the girls in saying that all boys are stinky and gross. At the same time, she feels she has to say something back when the boys say that all girls are stinky and gross. And she supposes that one of the red headed twin boys probably does tease her because he likes her, though she thinks there are probably better ways to flirt than being mean. Besides, she's pretty convinced that she's going to marry the boy she's known since they were both three, though he's never been too keen on the subject. None of this matters when they start playing. They aren't allowed to body slam at this age, but she does it in her dreams. The fights she sees on TV scare her sometimes, so she's glad they aren't allowed to do that either, but in her dreams she always emerges from those fights with a bloody, triumphant smile. She's mostly worried about her teeth. She thought she wanted to play goalie when she started, but quickly found it boring. She likes playing center because she likes to score. She likes playing wing because she likes to assist. She likes playing defense because it makes her think harder. But the goalie position is boring and also she would feel so guilty any time a puck got past her.

Playing hockey is exhausting. She has to exercise on the days she doesn't have practice, so that she won't wear out so quickly on the ice. Her dad starts taking her on runs around the block, in addition to the weekend bike rides he sometimes brings her along for. It's not all legs either - she also needs arm strength, and she needs to work on her shooting accuracy. She gets a net she can set up in the backyard for her birthday. Also roller blades, so she can practice her skating even when she's not at the rink. Also new ice skates. "I used to be able to buy you dolls," her grandma bemoans playfully - and she does still like the dolls, and the doll clothes, and her play horse collection. She still mostly draws horses. Hockey players aren't that exciting to draw. For Christmas, she got a hockey outfit for her doll, and she told everyone that is was the best gift she'd ever gotten. She could only say that because it was from her mom - if it had been from anyone else she wouldn't have been able to say that, because it would've made her mom sad. Some of the other girls on her team also had dolls with hockey outfits, and when they got together to play, they would make their dolls play hockey games against each other. College hockey games. And then they'd play school, but college school. Where everyone used a laptop.

She will end up going to the University of Michigan and playing for the Wolverines. Wayne ended their women's hockey program in 2011, breaking her heart. Michigan no longer had a NCAA option, so ACHA would have to do. She will get a degree in English Lit, because she likes to read. She will get a minor in Journalism, because if she gets hurt than she will be a sports journalist instead. Pursuing hockey beyond college won't be easy for her. There will be a lot of different leagues, eventually resulting in the PWHL. Eventually, Detroit will finally get it's own professional women's hockey team, and she will cry when she gets traded. She will finally get to play for her home state again. She will also nearly faint at the idea of playing with Hillary Knight.

Writing hockey fanfic will be a good way to blow off steam through her high school and college days, there's a good audience for it, no one knows she actually plays. She will find it super funny when her old fics start getting circled back around when she's an adult, and the fad explodes. Of course she can't tell anyone she wrote them.

At least, that's one future that could happen. One of many, for the girl who is coloring in velvet relief coloring pages of Lisa Frank unicorns with markers while stretched out on the living room floor on a Sunday afternoon, half watching the Detroit Lions game playing on the TV, hoping that they win because legend has it that it means they will get more snow. She wants foot upon foot of snow, so she can get a snow day and dig snow forts with her sisters.

She has dreams for the future - big dreams - but mostly she is thinking about tomorrow.
