The path wound up to the front door ofthe house, a cheerful sky-blue door, bright againstwhitewashed stone. A bronze doorknocker in theshape of a lion’s head holding a ring in its mouthgleamed in counterpoint to the white cat that laycoiled on the rush mat before the door.Sabriel lay on the bricks and smiled up at thecat, blinking back tears. The cat twitched andturned its head ever so slightly to look at her,revealing bright, green eyes.“Hello, puss,” croaked Sabriel, coughing as shestaggered once more to her feet and walked forward,groaning and creaking with every step. Shereached down to pat the cat, and froze—for, asthe cat thrust its head up, she saw the collararound its neck and the tiny bell that hung there.The collar was only red leather, but the Charterspellon it was the strongest, most enduring, bindingthat Sabriel had ever seen or felt—and the bellwas a miniature Saraneth. The cat was no cat, buta Free Magic creature of ancient power.

“Abhorsen,” mewed the cat, its little pinktongue darting. “About time you got here.”Sabriel stared at it for a moment, gave a littlesort of moan and fell forward in a faint ofexhaustion and dismay

Sabriel lifted her head to look around and once againmet the green eyes of the cat that wasn’t a cat.The creature was lying near her feet, at the endof the bed.“Who . . . what are you?” Sabriel asked nervously,...
“I have a variety of names,” replied the cat. Ithad a strange voice, half-mew, half-purr, withhissing on the vowels. “You may call meMogget. As to what I am, I was once manythings, but now I am only several. Primarily, Iam a servant of Abhorsen. Unless you would bekind enough to remove my collar?”Sabriel gave an uneasy smile, and shook herhead firmly. Whatever Mogget was, that collarwas the only thing that kept it as a servant ofAbhorsen . . . or anybody else. The Chartermarks on the collar were quite explicit aboutthat. As far as Sabriel could tell, the binding spellwas over a thousand years old. It was quite possiblethat Mogget was some Free Magic spirit asold as the Wall, or even older. She wondered121why her father hadn’t mentioned it, and with apang, wished that she had awoken to find herfather here, in his house, both their troubles over.“I thought not,” said Mogget, combining acareless shrug with a limbering stretch. It . . . orhe, for Sabriel felt the cat was definitely masculine,jumped to the parquet floor and saunteredover to the fire. Sabriel watched, her trained eyenoting that Mogget’s shadow was not alwaysthat of a cat.

“It’s only one of the servants,” Mogget said, ina patronizing tone. “Charter sendings, and prettylow-grade ones at that. They always burn themilk.”

Mogget purred under the scratching, but asSabriel leaned close, she could hear the faint pealof the tiny Saraneth bell cut through the purr, andshe was reminded that Mogget was no cat, but aFree Magic creature. For a moment, Sabriel wonderedwhat Mogget’s true shape was, and his truenature.

Mogget didn’t answer, but sat at her feet, andmade a movement that looked very much like hewas going to be sick. Sabriel recoiled, disgusted,then halted, as a small metallic object fell fromMogget’s mouth and bounced on the floor.“Almost forgot,” said Mogget. “You’ll needthis if I’m to come with you.”“What is it?” asked Sabriel, bending down topick up a ring; a small silver ring, with a rubygripped between two silver claws that grew outof the band.“Old,” replied Mogget, enigmatically. “You’ll162know if you need to use it. Put it on.”Sabriel looked at it closely, holding it betweentwo fingers as she slanted it towards the light. Itfelt, and looked, quite ordinary. There were noCharter marks on the stone or band; it seemed tohave no emanations or aura. She put it on.It felt cold as it slipped down her finger, thenhot, and suddenly she was falling, falling intoinfinity, into a void that had no end and nobeginning. Everything was gone, all light, allsubstance. Then Charter marks suddenlyexploded all around her and she felt gripped bythem, halting her headlong fall into nothing,accelerating her back up, back into her body,back to the world of life and death.

Surprisingly for such an ancient spell, she feltlittle more than pins and needles as the collarcame free. Then it was open, and suddenly179heavy, like a lead rope, or a ball and chain.Sabriel almost dropped it, but it became lightagain, then insubstantial. When Sabriel openedher eyes, the collar had simply ceased to exist.Mogget sat still, on her lap, and seemedunchanged—then he seemed to glow with aninternal light and expand, till he became frayedat the edges, and the light grew and grew. Withina few seconds, there was no cat-shape left, just ashining blur too bright to look at. It seemed tohesitate for a moment and Sabriel felt its attentionflicker between aggression towards her andsome inner struggle. It almost formed back intothe cat-shape again, then suddenly split into fourshafts of brilliant white. One shot forward, oneaft, and two seemed to slide into the wings.Then the whole Paperwing shone with fiercewhite brilliance, and it abruptly stopped itsheadlong dive and leveled out.
