[ Kiyomi ]

Kiyomi was not the socialite of her freezing Northern home. Her village, forever covered in sparkly, pure white snow, was known amongst the land for its beautiful, and if not that, talented maidens. Kiyomi was none of these. Her feathers were an ashy gray, not of the snow-colored desired. Her beak was large and crooked. Her eyes looked like an ashy pool, not at all like the "swatch of night sky" that was idealized. She was clumsy physically and mentally, stumbling over her feet as much as her words.
She stood out like a blot of ink on paper.

Kiyomi had kindness and humility of no bounds, but a strong spine with it. The young Lain would have loved to serve a husband and her family. The only problem was that not a soul would take her. Who wants a wife that is not only below par on looks, but in ability? No bird raised their wings. Kiyomi tried not to let bitterness creep into her heart as all her younger sisters were married off within months of their coming of age ceremonies.
"My time and man will come..." She always reassured herself.

But all she found herself doing day after day was caring for her parents and grandparents, the only Lains left in the house besides her.
One day she was up on the mountains, gathering berries in the short time limit given before the frost wilted even their hardy skins. But Kiyomi found her concentration nonexistent, wandering up the mountain and away from the freshest bushes. Not many Lains ventured up here-there were countless stories of beasts and demons. Ones that killed you, ones that ate you, ones that stole you away...a monster for every tale.
But Kiyomi met no demon besides the bitter cold winds and snow of blizzards.

"Just a nap, just a nap..." Were the last voluntary thoughts the young pet ever had.
When she awoke, Kiyomi was surrounded by bird song and a thick, blinding storm. The bird moved like a robot. Even though she was weighed down by ice that hung from her feathers and beak, her movements were jointed and precise. In front of her hovered two Wintersong minions, identical besides their eyes. The one to the left had sparkling black, the other a blank white. Kiyomi blinked slowly, exactly every three seconds. The Lain leaned forward, only for the twin birds to break into movement. The black-eyed minion flew straight onto her shoulder, the white-eyed disappearing into the sky.

The remaining Wintersong began to sing.
"I'm...hungry. I'm hungry." Kiyomi spread her wings, each feather shining with frost, and flew straight into the blizzard...Leaving her body to be hidden by the blizzard.

---

With her bitterness and anger now carried on her shoulder forevermore in the form of the black-eyed Wintersong, her soul flown to the heavens above, and her body frozen underneath feet of snow...Kiyomi's transformation was complete. Her troubled life that never went well, her chose to fall asleep and freeze to death as she dreamed...the Lain was a prime specimen. Imoyik, the black-eyed minion, sang a song so beautiful it attracted all who listened. And there, when they finally found the little bird, waited Kiyomi. Beautiful at last as Yuki-onna, but lacking all sweetness she held in mortality, she only knew her hunger.
Hunger for every single soul she could fine.
