I was born and raised by possibly the world's most kind parents. They lavished me with every gift any child could ever desire.
Toys.
Books.
Paints.
Clay.
Dolls.
Piano.
Soccer.
I kind of did a little bit of everything I could to fill the time that passed. Everything I had served as some tool to fill the gap of time when I was alone. With him. The beast that haunted my dreams each and every night. My parents worried and hired doctors to evaluate my psyche.
But they couldn't find anything wrong.
The sought the high priests in the land.
They, too, were dumbfounded. They sensed nothing peculiar about me, because they were not afflicted by him. Oh no. He was not attached to them as we was to me. Hungry fueled his passion to pursue me. Every step I took, he watched with careful eyes from behind my back. The shadows were his dominion. I was just a mere puppet in his play.
I could never shake him loose. Over time, I grew to accept his presence.
I noticed, as I grew up, dark, grey sags beneath my eyes settled. They increased in darkness and size with every passing day and my body became weak because of him.
"What do you want from me, Shadow?!" I screamed at the wall that hid from the sun. I threw my toys at the darkness. They were swallowed up by the shadows.
"Haa....Haaaa... Happinessssss...." he echoed. It was a hollowed growl, yet I sensed some sort of sadness matching it.
All he wanted was to be happy..
