Chatari's skills in the kitchen are truthfully the only reason why he's aboard. The paralix is everything that his colors say of him- harsh, cold, unforgiving, and he is horribly elitist. He believes that his species is better than any other, and when he first came aboard took to ordering the others about and demeaning them rather cruelly. Quite often acting more like a spoiled child than anything, the crew honestly planned to get rid of him the next they put into port. His cooking was fit for kings and queens, but so was his attitude. The crew mockingly calls him the Prince, which has led to several fights breaking out in the past. They still happen, but not quite as often anymore.

Truthfully, he's always been this cold. Like the rest of the crew, he has no family or home to return to. His parents and older brother, as well as his older brother's wife, died in a motor accident several years ago, and his surviving niece lives on her own in an apartment too small for them both. It was her idea to get him working aboard a ship of some kind, and though he appreciates her good intentions, he has always hated others and believes that he always will. Over time he's grown to be a little more lighthearted around just the crew, more prone to sarcasm and friendly insults than outright cruelty. Perhaps with more time he'll even grow to care for them a little.

Chatari does have a bit of a soft spot when it comes to birds- he keeps several in a small aviary sectioned off from the rest of the hold, where he has built in special windows to allow them plenty of sunlight and fresh air. The aviary itself is also a make-shift greenhouse, housing a wide variety of plants that he cultivates with care. Many of them are edible herbs and fruits that he often includes in his cooking. He does not allow anyone else to enter this greenhouse without his strict supervision, but any travelers staying aboard are welcome to come and look from the outside if they like.

There's a rumor among the crew that he's courting a young lady, though, for every now and then he receives a letter faintly smelling of fine perfume. He usually says that the letter's from his niece, but no one who's met her has noticed the same fragrance.
