Dan is a jolly and warmhearted man who runs a small diner and bakery from within his husband's nonprofit, Rainbow House. He offers cheap or often free food to residents of the ex-hotel, though non-residents pay standard price, and any profits from the bakery go towards maintaining the building. It's not a glamorous job, but it's exactly what Dan always dreamed of; baking and cooking warm, comforting meals is his favorite thing to do, and helping LGBTQ+ folks with his passion is as fulfilling as he could ever have hoped. He puts in hard work running his little business mostly on his own, though he wouldn't want to do anything else. As the saying goes, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. Hokey, sure, but in his case he feels it to be true!

His husband, Klark, is a grumpy and awkward sort, so he's very well balanced by Daniel's friendly and positive attitude. Dan is a big teddy bear who gives fantastic hugs and has lots of love to give. He's the chatty type, a lover of gossip and giving advice, though he does tend to have pretty good advice to give. Most of all, though, he's happy to be a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen when things are rough for others. While the physical labor element of his work tends to be manageable and even enjoyable for him, he does sometimes experience burnout from the emotional labor he puts in, and he can have trouble setting boundaries for when he just can't spare the empathy for everyone all the time. This is where Klark usually comes in to hog Dan to himself for some rest and recuperation.

The hotel is no stranger to animals, as residents are welcome to bring their pets, and Dan himself has a little old dog named Mooch that spends a lot of his time napping in the diner. Mooch gets his name from his habit of begging for food as it's being prepared or eaten, though in his older age he no longer needs to put much work in; Daniel spoils the heck out of him.
