Tale of Three Best Friends
Since all three of their births, excluding Litis; Brandbear, Suay, and Vires have all grown up together doing thousands of fun things. Being best of friends from day one, it's only normal as they grew up, three of them went their separate ways. Brandbear, a studious romantic boy in denial, surprisingly found love after he confessed to Yanee. Their bonds still strong as he studies to become an Engineer and her, a pediatric doctor.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Vires always knows what he is going to do with his days off. He never just lounged around heaven, or wasted the hours alone – not any more. He’d fly and fly until he found Her. Vires knew Her very well. Likes, dislikes, facial expressions, all were logged away safely in his mind, recalled during long hours of work when the night air was empty and the gates lay still and unthreatened. It wasn’t his job to Watch her, but he treated it solemnly, as if it were. Her name was Suay.
Was he infatuated? Perhaps. He didn’t like to think so – poets had given his devotion other names, and terms like ‘love at first sight’ tended to strike him horribly in the gut when they surfaced. Those notions had never applied to their relationship. He wished they did.
The third of the month came like clockwork, and Vires found himself again sitting under an old willow tree. Its branches were still laden with leaves, casting green light that tinted smiles and skin. She was there next to him, smiling as long, measured strokes covered a white canvas. The silence between them was comfortable – neither really needed words, a simple glance or smile covered in a second what hours of conversation could never even reach. Words had become obsolete, Vires knew her laugh and posture, knew how to gently pat her head when she was upset, acted in the way that good friends did.
What he would give to not be friends. He might have grown a hate for the word ‘friends’ in her presence.
“What are you painting?†A short sentence, though it was certainly unlike him to start any conversation at all. His voice was gruff, uncaring, but the question exposed his interest.
Suay looked up, fingers stalling as she blinked down at the canvas. “I don’t know.†Her sweet voice pierced the air, and her laugh was songlike enough to make the birds jealous. Or at least, Vires thought so. When had he become so sentimental?
Together, their heads tilted as they examined the canvas in unison. When the project had begun, Suay had just painted randomly; applying strategic paints and colors in whatever way she found most pleasing. The result had been a spontaneous burst of colors – blues, golds, whites, all swirled together. If one squinted, they could faintly see the outline of a man, engulfed by sweeping wings and feathers. Vires, for the first time he could recall, couldn’t read the expression cryptically imprinted on Suay’s face. He wondered if even she knew what she was thinking.
After a beat, all he said was, “I like it.â€
Suay smiled up at him, and he felt his stomach clench.
For a moment, he thought everything was perfect, beautiful, bright. Her wide eyes stayed on his, and he felt himself leaning forward, almost unwillingly. They couldn’t do this, he couldn’t do this, and a wave of vertigo was making his world spin.
For a split second, he thought she was leaning in too. Then, from a distance, a clanging church bell shattered the moment, its many delicate pieces disintegrating before they even hit the ground. Suay jolted back, dismayed.
Vires heard her voice through a dim fog as she began to pack up, “Oh, god! I totally forgot the time – I promised Ally I’d meet him later, he said he had a surprise for me.â€
He nodded wordlessly, shrugging. His head wouldn’t stop spinning; he thought he was going to be sick. It baffled him how violently he reacted to the object of his affections, while the next day he could carelessly sweep down legions of trespassers if needed.
“I’m so sorry. I know we always spend the afternoon together, but this is really important. You understand, right?†She looked over at her friend worriedly, arms loaded with art supplies, unaware that her hair was dangerously close to getting dipped in an open pot of white paint. “I’ll see you later. It was really good seeing you again, Vires.â€
Silent and blank faced, Vires stood up. “Yeah.†She was beginning to leave – backing away to go see her boyfriend. In two broad steps, he caught up to her and blocked her path, causing her to stop and stare up at him. No smile was offered, no words were said. He only pushed her hair back, keeping it safe from the paint in her arms, and stepped out of her way.
Vires didn’t look back as she scurried away. He simply stared up at the sky, remembering earlier denials – he didn’t like Suay, he never had. The winged man’s wish changed; he no longer wanted romantic instances of love. He just wanted – dearly wished – that he could forget it, forgo the guilt and pain.
But who could not love someone like Suay? He would never want to be just friends.
