Sugar and spice and everything nice...

"You are going to regret that!!!" She ran from her sister's screeches, down the hallway and into her bedroom. She quickly slipped under her bed and waited in the dark. The door whisked open and screams got much, much louder. "Where are you, you little brat?" came the booming voice. Eliza could hear the rustling near the bed but she didn't dare move a muscle. "What did you leave in my room? It is all over my new SHOES!!!" her sister cried. The little girl heard her sister move for the closet and she was going to go for the escape, but her giggles gave her away thinking about the shoes. So instead, she leapt from under the bed and shouted, "Gosh Sasha, it is only a bit of melted skittles." She then (to her sister's horror) licked the side of the shoe in Sasha's hand and bolted through the door. The last thing she saw as she turned to look, was her sister's disgusted face. Eliza decided it might be good to go outside and disappear until her mom got home.

As it turns out, this was an hour later. Ms. Hughes lifted each leg out of her Camaro as if they weighed a ton each. But they were normal and she was just really tired. With groceries in hand, she ambled towards the front door. Meanwhile, a little 8-year-old shadow followed behind her. Eliza's mom had not been in the house 10 seconds, when her oldest daughter came in crying about her new sneakers. "They are RUINED, mother! And all thanks to her!" She pointed an accusing finger at Eliza, who had just appeared behind her mom. Ms. Hughes sighed and tried to settle the fight by agreeing to buy Sasha a new pair this weekend. Sasha left in a huff and went to her room, still very distraught. Her mother turned around and frowned at the little girl. "Do you always have to mess with your sister? She's in those awkward years and needs her space," she said. She patted Eliza to her room.

Eliza grumbled as she sat down in the room. She never meant to mess with Sasha...she was sometimes clumsy and this time she spilled her Skittles on the shoes coming inside. And it had been a hot day. Shaking this from her head, she returned to what she had planned on doing today--inventory! Every week, her mom gave her an allowance. Nothing big by today's standards, but nothing to cough at either. And she saved the money every time so that when they went to the store, she could buy more for her stash. She pulled the drawer from the depths of her closet and her eyes lit up! There were skittles (her favorite), starbursts, necco wafers, jelly beans, red rope licorice (the black kind was nasty), jordan almonds, candy buttons--almost anything you could ever want. Well, except chocolate. Eliza never really cared for chocolate and that tends to melt faster if it were to get hot. She giggled at her treasure and pulled out her records notebook. Her mother bought it for her on her 5th birthday. It was in the shape of a lollipop, the top part anyway...one of those spiral striped lollies. She kept a strict record of what went in and out of her box. She would even lend some of her candy to her friends if they promised to return it later. That is, if she had any friends. She often went to school with bits of candy stuck to her hair and clothing. That didn't exactly make her popular with the girls...nor with the boys for that matter. Rather, it made her the butt of their jokes. So Eliza normally came straight home after school and kept to her yard and room. There, she played games and watched TV with her candy. Her candy was her friend.

Ms. Hughes came in to check on Eliza before she went off to bed herself. Her daughter was dozing noisily on the floor, surrounded by her friends. Eliza's mother never understood her child's obsession with candy. She hardly ever ate it and she wasn't even obese. She was just a normal 8-year-old with a weird hobby. She looked wistfully down at the sleeping figure. She had been that age once and she remembered it as one of her favorite points in life. She didn't have to worry about boys or growing up or having children or raising them alone. Not that she regretted any decision she made, but life was much simpler then. But then again, every child has a different experience and Eliza was no exception. Eliza was introverted and to be honest, maybe that was better. Karen also remembered being her other daughter's age and she was the complete opposite of Eliza. She was very popular, especially with the boys. She shook those thoughts out of her head and gently placed her sleeping daughter into her bed before turning out the lights.

The next morning, Eliza got up as she normally did and went through her routine to get ready. She bolted out the door without saying goodbye or grabbing breakfast because the bus was about to leave. On the bus she sat down in the front and started to hear quiet laughter from the kids in the back. This wasn't entirely abnormal so she just brushed it off and looked at the scenery on the way to school. Once there, she walked down the steps and the laughter got louder. The two kids laughing were right behind her. "What happened Eliza? Did you have a fight with a rainbow?" the bigger of the two pushed her down. She has apparently slept on her candy and there was a rainbow print on her face. Eliza was frightened at this point and there were no adults within calling distance. The two bullies continued to insult her and shove her anytime she got up. She found an opening and ran past them...she didn't care where. It was then she heard her teacher calling out her name. However, she was not going to go back to that. There was a forest next to the school so she ran in there. Everything got darker and she kept tripping on the branches and foliage on the ground.

She ran as fast as she could and eventually made it back home. She thought it was a bit weird that she had made it so quickly since it was so far away but she just shrugged off the notion. No one was there of course so she went in and slammed her door shut. She didn't need school, she had her friends here! Through her tears, she pulled out her drawer and her book and started looking at everything. Then she got the best idea! She really could have a friend! Over the next hour, she was hard at work. A lot of red rope licorice here and some other decorations there for the features and she had created the most beautiful friend she had ever seen. She named her new friend Nan. Eliza had always liked that name. As soon as she called out the name, Nan seemed to come alive! This was a dream come true for the little girl, she finally had a friend. She had someone that could play with her and would sing with her and do anything she wanted to without judging her for her odd collection--she was made of candy after all! But for now she was exhausted after making the cute little candy creature. She cuddled up to Nan and fell asleep in her arms...

When Ms. Hughes got home that night, the police were waiting for her in the driveway. They looked worried and in turn she was afraid that something had happened. Eliza's teacher was there too--her eyes red from crying. Karen went to the teacher and asked what was wrong. "Eliza ran away this morning because she was being bullied by some kids," she whispered almost too softly to hear. "She ran into the woods and wouldn't come back. The police had found her about two miles from your house," she said. The teacher couldn't go on without breaking down so the sheriff had to finish the story. Apparently it had been too dark to see well because of the trees. Eliza kept tripping over roots until she came to a small cliff overlooking a lake. But she didn't stop running...and on the way down she got tangled in some vines...and...

They found the little eight year old. The first officer on the scene said that the scene was odd. Her bookbag had fallen and a bunch of her candy has exploded from the inside, so that the entire ground was littered with it. The heat from the day had melted a lot if it and it made everything smell sweet. And there Eliza was in the midst of all this. She had a smile on her face and she looked as if she were trying to hug the vines that had entangled her and stopped her breathing. She had seemingly slipped away peacefully, dreaming of holding Nan in her arms.
