"Tell me, child, have you heard the tales they tell of a beautiful creature who once roamed the earth? There are many different ones - no two are the same. In some, she is said to be an enormous lion that comes to bring forth judgement, to destroy all that was tainted by sin. Some say instead that she was a fox; a trickster spirit that would pluck wandering maidens from the roads and steal their souls. In others yet, she was a noble wolf, a guardian of the forests. Though her role is ever changing, one detail is always the same.

All the tales, they speak of brilliant streaks of gold among her fur.

I could never hope to tell you all these stories, but I have one favorite I so love to pass on.

Many, many years ago, the beast's reign over humans was coming to an end. She had grown tired, weak, and so very lonely. After all, she had no family. No children, no mate. In her desperate yearning for love, she cut her heart in two! From the lost half, a cub was born...but she was not done. Again and again she divided her heart, until it was split into thousands of tiny pieces. Each and every piece grew into a new animal, and she found herself surrounded by bears and deer and foxes - any creature you could possibly imagine, and they all shared their mother's coat of black and gold. The beast was overjoyed with her new family, but found she no longer had the strength to stand. Her children did their best to care for her, but with so little of her own heart left, she could not be saved from death.

...hm? Sad, you say? I suppose I have always had something of a soft spot for tragedy.

But let's not be silly.
