Once upon a time...
...In a little village hidden among the black pines, a terrible darkness came creeping through the woods.
The villagers called it the Black Mist.
It swallowed those brave enough to venture into its depths, and from its shadows came pale, hungry creatures that hunted anyone who tried to flee. The villagers built walls, lit bonfires, and prayed to every god whose name they knew, but nothing could stop the Mist from drawing closer. Before long, they had nowhere left to run.
At last, when hope had nearly run out, the village chief remembered an old tale. It spoke of a forgotten rite that other villages had once used against evils they could not defeat. According to the tale, darkness could be drawn into a living vessel and destroyed with holy fire. The purer and more beautiful the vessel, the greater the evil it could contain before both were burned away.
The chief believed he had found their salvation. And so they chose Anna.
She was the jewel of their valley, cherished by everyone who knew her. Her face was the one people wished to see at their feasts, and her voice could soothe the sick, comfort the grieving, and lull frightened children into gentle dreams. Even the bitter-hearted found themselves speaking more kindly in her presence. She had never once lied, never once faltered, never once spoken a harsh word. And most importantly, she had never once disobeyed.
So, of course, they chose her. Who else could be more fitting for the task ahead?
They dressed her in white and laced her hair with lilies. The villagers gathered around her, singing the old hymns as they led her through the woods to the stone altar. Anna followed willingly, humming the familiar lullabies beneath her breath. When they reached the altar, she walked the final steps barefoot, smiling gently as she sang the melody of the rite.
Perhaps she believed she would save them all, or perhaps she simply trusted that they knew what was best. No one thought to ask.
The ritual worked… Well, almost.
The Black Mist gathered around the altar, thickening until the trees disappeared behind its dark folds. It crept over the stones and tangled itself around Anna's chest, then around her head. Then, as the old words were spoken, it began to enter her nostrils. It filled her lungs, threaded itself through her veins, and settled into the chambers of her heart.
The Mist had swallowed many things before, but never had it found a vessel quite like Anna.
It tasted her fear, her longing to be loved, and her boundless capacity to love in return. It found a heart that had not turned bitter, even when faced with its own end. For the first time, the Mist did not feel compelled to devour what it had found. It couldn’t.
The villagers watched as the last tendrils disappeared beneath her skin. They believed the evil had been contained. All that remained was the final step: the holy fire that would destroy the vessel and everything within it.
They lit the pyre. The fire bent and shuddered as though caught in a sudden wind. Then the Black Mist spilled from Anna's body, pouring across the altar in great, rolling waves. It swallowed the flames as easily as the flames might have swallowed a dry leaf.
Then it turned upon the villagers.
Their prayers were cut short. Their cries vanished into the dark. One by one, the people who had brought Anna there disappeared beneath the Mist, until nothing remained of the gathering but empty stones and a field of white lilies.
And through it all, Anna stood unharmed, humming the same sweet melody she had sung on the way to the altar. The flames never touched her.By morning, the village was silent.
In time, the ruined village began to change. The Mist no longer wandered through its streets like a hungry beast. Under Anna's watch, it settled around the borders, guarding the old roads and the narrow paths between the trees.
It shaped itself in many different forms, but most commonly, as little misty-made helpers. The houses were rebuilt. Gardens took root in the ashen soil, and lilies bloomed where the pyre had stood. Lanterns shone through the haze, and the sound of Anna's singing drifted between the rooftops. The little village became something that barely nowhere else in the world has achieved to be: A refuge where no one needs to worry about being devoured by the dark mist. Well, at least no one who has passed trough the gates.
Anna herself also changed, though no one could say exactly when. Wearing the mist as a dark cloak, she became Nyusha, and as for the place she called home, it became known by outsiders as the Humming Vale, for those who strayed too close could sometimes hear a woman's voice rising from the trees. Her song was gentle enough to draw the weary from their paths, yet no one could say where it would lead them.
Some call it a den of monsters, ruled by a witch who had devoured her own people and stolen their land. They said that anyone who entered the Vale and returned alive must have struck a bargain with the darkness, for surely no decent soul could live beneath the Black Mist. And so the stories spread, each more dreadful than the last.
Few cared to wonder why the Mist, which devoured every soul that approached it, left the Mistmother untouched. Even fewer dared to ask what the villagers had done to earn their fate.
Those who find their way to the little village are sometimes greeted by a woman in a black cloak, with lilies in her hair and a song upon her lips.
"You may enter, if the Mist does not refuse you. It always knows who wants to be saved, and who only wants to survive."
(...)Eventually, she finds Aysha lying dead near her village and revives her. Aysha becomes her first real friend.
Later they learn the worse-than-normal dark mist that tormented her village was the result of Teodors experimenting around the area.
