I didn't always live in the best part of town, you know. I actually had very humble beginnings.

My sister Glittering and I lived in the Shinwa Memorial Children's Home just south of Veta Lake for as far back as I could remember. There was no information available on our parents. We just showed up one day on the door step and that was that. We didn't have much, but we had each other and that was something at least. We always knew from an early age that any history we wanted to have we would have to make ourselves, anyway. The staff took decent care of us and the rest of their charges. We were never referred to by our given names but nicknames instead. Glittering was the Sun for her cheery ways and outgoing tendencies and I was the Moon, clinging to shadows and preferring my own company.

Our days were spent in typical orphanage fashion with nothing spectacular or notable happening, except when the loud speaker crackled on and announced a name, signifying a child that had found a forever home. No one ever wanted a pair of siblings, though, so there we stayed. The same routine day in and day out. That all changed, of course, when she walked in. Ruthe was her name and she had the prettiest smile I had ever seen. She was new to our city but she loved children and had come to volunteer and make some friends.

I don't know what it was about her that made me pay closer attention. She had a sort of inner glow that warmed me whenever she came near. It was almost like she recognized my loneliness and understood where I was coming from. She appeared placid enough, with a bright smile and a cheery attitude, but I could tell there was a sadness to her demeanor. She didn't talk much, but she listened quietly as the children talked, considering their words with thoughtfulness and always giving an encouraging reply. It was no surprise to me when she became a huge favorite and I was always vying for one more minute of her attention until her shift was over.

As the days turned to weeks she kept coming to volunteer and I kept hoping for one more day with her. She would play with all of us, but she always had a special treat or kind word for me. Over time she started to feel as much like family as Glitter did and we saw her almost every other day. she helped me with my homework, gave me good advice on resolving squabbles with others, and I always, always got her steely eye when I misbehaved.

One fine day, she brought someone with her to help volunteer, a relative of hers named Angel. She and her husband Spirit had recently gotten married and were looking to add to their family.
"We have this gargantuan beautiful white house that Spirit built for me," She said enthusiastically, rolling her eyes at him, "and we are just rattling around in it! We have more than enough room and we have always wanted a big family to cherish. There are so many youngsters that need a place that it seemed silly for us not to adopt." She beamed her fiery smile down at me and Glitter with a wink at Ruthe.

Angel and Ruthe came often that month, and I knew they were trying to decide who would get to live in Angel's big white house on Veta Lake. I had seen the house being built, actually, on the way to an all too rare field trip to the Burrero Farm at the top of the hill. The window glass had glistened in the sun and the water created ripple-like shadows that caused it to look almost ethereal as we drove by. I couldn't even fathom visiting in such a place, much less living in it but I knew Glitter deserved to. She lit up like a star every time Angel was around, and hung on her every word. It was clear that Angel had really taken to Glitter as well and they often paused to beam at each other before launching into some song or another or a rousing game of tag with RainbowNymph and Etherielle.

Ruthe and I more often than not, found ourselves on the sidelines of their engagements. She and I would often sneak away to the library to enjoy a new book or play a board game. Ruthe even brought me a gift, a hand sewn book with beautiful flowers pressed into the cover and on the inside page was inscribed in Ruthe's neat script, "The future belongs to those that believe in the beauty of their dreams." She told me it was a diary and that I should use it to record my thoughts and feelings. It was the nicest thing I had ever owned, and I threw myself at her waist after she explained it. I hugged her hard, tears streaming down my face.

"Good things are just around the corner for you if you will only reach out and grab them. Why are you crying, dear Cybel?" she asked me softly. "I'm afraid everything is about to change. What if Angel adopts me and Glitter? What if Angel only adopts Glitter? Will I ever see you again?" My tears fell in earnest as I contemplated a life without Ruthe. She held me close and said, "Shhhhh, of course you will see me again! Do you think I would let you go now that we have found each other? Hush now, it will all work out as it is meant to." I took great comfort in her words and snuggled down into her lap for another story, occasionally stroking the beautiful diary with my fingertips as she read.

That week, Glitter and I slept in her bed, not knowing what the future would hold. She tried to say she would refuse to go without me but I put that to bed as quickly as I could. "Glitter, this could be your chance to have a family! Someone to take care of you and love you and give you a home!" I yelled at her.
"But you are my family and you take care of me and you love me and make this a home!" she yelled back at me.
"Glitter, Glitter, please! I would never forgive myself if I didn't make sure you took this chance. You deserve so much more than this place. Please promise me you'll go if they offer. We will always have each other. That will never change!"
"Oh Cybel..okay. For you, I will go," she finally agreed after much discussion.
I sighed with relief. For as sunshiny as she was she could be right stubborn when she wanted to be.

Finally, that next morning, the loud speaker crackled on and Glitter was called to the office. She hugged me tightly and then trudged to the door, tears on her face. RainbowNymph was next, and her face lit up as she skipped with glee to the office, nothing to weigh her down as she headed toward her future. Etherielle was third, and she tried to hide her shock and excitement as she went down the hall, trembling. There were no more announcements.

I tried to bolster my heart as it plunged to my stomach. I wasn't going with Glitter. I was staying here. Alone. I excused myself and ran out the door to the high fields behind the building, crouching in the wild flowers and breathing the fresh air, trying to pull myself together. How will I handle this? What would I do? I thought wildly to myself. Get a grip, get a grip! I laid out in the grass, calmed my breathing, and watched the clouds drift in the sky for quite some time.

Some time later I awoke abruptly to several aides calling my name, and one voice in particular I had been longing to hear. Ruthe!
"Cybel! Where have you been?? You scared me to death disappearing like that! What on Earth were you thinking?!" She scolded. I hung my head. "I'm sorry, I was just so happy for Glitter and sad for me and I couldn't bear it so I can out here to calm down and I must have fallen asleep," I pleaded. "I didn't mean to scare you!"

"Sweet girl, it's okay. It has been a big day for you. It is about to get bigger, though, so hang on. While you were asleep, you missed the loud speaker calling *your* name," she grinned at me. "I recently purchased a piece of land in Angel's neighborhood," she confessed, "so you have a choice to make. Angel and I discussed it at length. You can either go to live with her and Glitter in the big white house, or you can come and live with me in my medium sized house once it is built on the same street," she smiled. "The choice is yours, dear Cybel."

Oh!
Oh!
A choice!
But what to choose? Was there ever any choice at all, really? I slid my hand in hers. "Where will we live while our house is being built?" I grinned tearfully up at her.
"Why Angel's house, of course!" she laughed at me.
Her joyous face lit up as she scooped me up and swung me around and around in the sweet wild flowers and I savored the thought of a home with a loving parent at last. :dizzy:
