He's had a life, he thinks. Not a long one. Not a good one. But not wholly bad. There were moments of happiness, of lightness, when he thought that perhaps it was worth living. He thinks of these things as the mutt launches forward and wraps its teeth around his neck.
Little spots of sunshine. He thinks about Mags's laugh, the way her lips curled up to show her missing tooth. His mother teaching him how to fish on lazy afternoons. Winning the first Hunger Games. Picking blackberries with his best friend in the summer. The moment he found out he would be a father.
Mostly, though, he thinks about Annie. He thinks about her hair, the way that it caught sunlight. How her hands fit into his, how sure he felt when he was by her side. The curve of her shoulders. He thinks about her smile, the scar on her knee, the way she threw her head back when she laughed. He thinks about the walks they used to take around the lake after dinner. They took so many. Not enough—it would never be enough. But there were many. He is grateful for this.
He loves her. Their love story is a tragedy, but it is still a love story. Still filled with love.
He loves her, he thinks. Smiles, and the mutt closes its jaws.

So that's who Finnick loves, I think. Not his string of fancy lovers in the Capitol. But a poor, mad girl back home.
