Shirley

My Heart is Set on You:

They seemed to end up at the diner almost every night, not that she minded. It was good food, food people and great milkshakes. Plus it gave Danny a place to bask in the attention of all his followers. Really she didn't mind it at all. Shirley actually loved all of it. It was fun and she was always surrounded by friends. But she couldn't help but notice the lone greaser in the back, looking a little unhappy at their entrance.

She didn't like that at all. Shirley didn't want to make enemies and she surely didn't want anyone to be unhappy. Maybe if she just went over to talk to the loner, things would be better? She looked so familiar. She was sure the greaser was in ONE of her classes.

Rory! That was her name. She was generally a loner from what Shirley had noticed. Unless she was with her greaser friends. Maybe it was time to change that and upset the social norms at the same time.

Danny had gotten up to mess with the jukebox as he so often did. For once she didn't feel like jumping up with everyone else and singing and dancing, even as the diner patrons erupted in motion and sound. It had transformed from peaceful eating establishment to hoppin' dance club in no time!Shirley slipped out from the booth she had occupied with Danny and walked over to Rory. Despite her nerves, she put on her best, welcoming smile and sat down across from the greaser.

"Hey there. You looked lonely so I decided to come join ya!" She chirped, trying to keep her smile in place. She could tell Rory was uneasy with her sudden approach, and honestly that was the last thing Shirley ever wanted.

"Why would you want to join some greaser thug? Surely your jock boyfriend wouldn't want you hanging out with me?" Rory's reply stung a little, but Shirley pushed it back. It wasn't shocking that Rory lashed out. After all, most of the jocks and cheerleaders would very quickly mock and tease. But that wasn't why Shirley had come over.

"Well, he's not really my boyfriend. We just go out sometimes. And I've had enough sock-hopping for right now. I think Danny will be fine by himself, plus you seem interesting! We should at least try and get along, you know? No reason to let silly social stigmas divide us." Words were Shirley's specialty. She was smarter than most people gave her credit for and loved playing the mediator. Plus who didn't want to have a bunch of friends.

She noticed Rory accepting her answer and felt a warm glow come over her. It was nice to see Rory wasn't someone who just mindless accepting social cliques and blindly followed them.

Pretty soon they were talking as if they had been friends forever. They took turns ordering milk shakes and before long there were four empty glasses sitting in front of each of them. Shirley was so caught up in her conversation that she didn't notice the music dying down or the people shuffling out. She wouldn't have noticed for another few hours except Danny came over to their booth.

"Hey babe, you wanna get going?" She looked up at Danny and gave him a smile. He was her ride, but she didn't want to just leave yet. She looked back at Rory and bit her lip.

"Oh! I didn't even notice this place was empty." She glanced around the diner, taking in all the empty booths that had previously been full. Even the jukebox was dark and quiet. She took one last look at Rory before answering. "I think I'm going to hang out with Rory for a bit longer. We"re having a really good conversation!"

Danny looked at Rory and smiled. "If you're sure babe. I'll catch ya at school tomorrow."

Shirley looked back to Rory after he had left and gave her a broad smile. "So where were we? I think you were telling me about this time you had an engine explode in front of you!" She wanted nothing more than for Rory to continue her story, and just have her open up.

"Oh right! So let me tell ya, I was there, covered in black soot with the smoking mass of metal in front of me and I had no idea what happened."She couldn't help but laugh, which was easy to do on the best of days. But it seemed even easier with Rory. Her stories were so funny and involved, and the way she gestured with her hands wildly made it all the better. Before long hours had passed and Shirley's hope of a ride home had long since left.

"Oh drat! Its late and my ride left hours ago. I guess I'll have to walk." She muttered, looking around for a familiar face who she could hitch a ride with. But she turned up empty. She bit her lip in slight worry, the smile fading from her face for a split second.

"No need! I can give you a ride...if you want. I have my bike in the parking lot if you don't mind a little adventure." Rory offered, instantly perking the cheerleader back up. The idea of riding on a motorcycle was exciting. It was something Shirley had never had the chance to do but had secretly always wanted to. And now the opportunity was looking her in the face. She'd be dumb to pass this chance up.

"Sure! It sounds fun! I've never been on a motorcycle though."

"Don't worry, its easy to get used to. Just trust me." And the smile Rory gave her, instantly put any worry Shirley had to rest. It was so warm and welcoming. Such a change from the cold greaser she had sat down with originally. She could get used to spending time with this woman.

They rode through the night, the bike roaring down the dark street. Shirley couldn't help but screech in happiness as she wrapped her arms around the other woman's waist. She didn't notice the way the greaser kept looking at her, too lost in her own euphoria. However she did take notice of how good Rory smelled and how warm she was, as Shirley clung for dear life.

The ride ended far too soon as they came to a stop in front of Shirley's house. She would have to ask Rory to give her a ride again soon. Although that would mean that they would be hanging out again. Shirley certainly hoped so.

They walked to her doorstep in a comfortable silence, Rory's hands stuffed into her jacket pockets. Shirley noticed the awkward glances the greaser gave her and smiled to herself. Maybe she was misreading this situation, but she had to go for it anyway.

"So I had a really cool time with you...I uh, it'd be cool if we could hang out again. You know as friend or-" She cut Rory off with a kiss, making sure to keep it gentle but sincere. Judging from the other girl's reaction, Shirley had hit the nail on the head.

"Sounds fun! I look forward to it." Shirley giggled after pulling away. "Get home safe ok! I'll see you tomorrow." She smiled as she walked into her house, closing the door behind her. She peeked out of the window, watching as Rory stood there with a smile on her face.

They would definitely have to do this again.

And soon.
