Born in the Galar region, Gael grew up in the small town of Ballonlea. His parents worked closely with the gym leader, Opal, to maintain her theatre. Surrounded by ghost, psychic, and fairy type Pokemon had never bothered him in the slightest, and it wasn’t unusual for Gael to wander around the Glimwood Tangle if he wasn’t at school. His parents always instilled in him to be careful - although the psychic, fairy, and ghost types that stuck close to the town were friendly, they weren’t always in the Glimwood Tangle.

After a painful stumble down a hill in the Glimwood Tangle when he was sixteen, Gael ended up bruised and injured, landing in a ditch. It wasn’t difficult for him to get out of it, but the wounds he sustained during the fall hurt more than he had initially believed.

Resting up against one of the overly large glowing mushrooms, Gael watched as a lone Ponyta peered at him from around a thick fern bush. It seemed to know that he was injured, and after watching for several minutes as Gael tried to stand back up again and failing, the Ponyta trotted over.

The Ponyta was apprehensive at first, eyeing him warily. Gael was unnerved at the fact that the Ponyta kept staring into his eyes, but he didn’t feel any malice from the Pokemon. As the Ponyta stood before him, it lowered their head to gently place their horn upon Gael’s head. A sense of calm overcame him, and the stinging pain from his wounds ebbed away. Glancing over the few cuts on his hands, Gael watched as they faded away before his very eyes - his skin stitched back together as if he never had taken a tumble in the first place. The Ponyta took a step away from him after his wounds had fully healed, its mane shimmering slightly.

Standing to head back to Ballonlea, Gael gave the Ponyta his thanks, wishing he had something to give it for their help. However, instead of going on its own path, the Ponyta followed him back through the forest and into Ballonlea - stopping beside him as they reached the gym. His parents were waiting for him there, pelting him with question after question as to where he had been. When their eyes landed on the Ponyta, they went quiet as Gael began to explain what happened - his tumble in the woods, and this Ponyta helping him.

Without saying another word, Gael’s father swiftly went into the gym before coming back out, holding a dusk ball in his hands. Handing it off to Gael, he was left with a choice. Does he ask the Ponyta to join him and let it become his first Pokemon? Or does he let it roam back into the woods?

Not giving him a chance to make the decision, the Ponyta nudged the ball with the tip of its nose and became the first Pokemon Gael had ever caught.
