Audrey Deschamps is 14 years old when she is orphaned and sent from Paris to live with her Uncle in the south of France. In a quiet Catholic village, she explores the fine line between fantasy and reality as she mourns her parents and adjusts to a new life in the French countryside.

France was crawling ivy and crumbling chateaus and sleepy towns. It was moonlit nights counting shooting stars whilst bats swept between palms in the balmy air at dusk. It was crates of Saturn peaches, fresh from the marché, eaten as the sun rose with hands still slathered in sun cream and cheeks dotted with freckles left by loving kisses from the sun.

Not all that is beautiful is kind. Just beyond this simple life is a world dark and dangerous and hungry for children like Audrey Deschamps. When she discovers this dark world lurking just past the edge of the garden, Audrey is transported to a fantastical place where monsters roam, kelpies trick and ghosts haunt. There are wicked princes plotting murderous schemes and a threat greater than even those existing in this place could fathom.

The train ride from Paris to Montpellier was fine, if a little dull. Uneventful and frankly boring for Audrey who, being 14 years old, preferred not to sit in a train car for 4 hours. She would meet her Grandfather at the University. Grandfather didn't work there, but Dr. Deschamps often visited the Faculty of Medicine as a guest and advisor. He had been a doctor for many years and was well-respected by professionals across France.
