@Skree With that, and irl toads used for licking actually do taste quite bad, and how @Sunflower mentioned, who is going to taste test the bitterness of very deadly tadpoles? I'm wondering what makes these lil xotls so tempting in the first place- Maybe xotls taste like skittles and people don't even realize they're a hallucinogen, they just want to see which xotl is which flavor. Is a dusk xotl blue raspberry? :D
Perhaps the toxins can be put to good use, since both toads and the dart frogs' toxins have potential medicinal usefulness irl. So they don't want to remove the poison totally... maybe breeders actively feed their xotls the poisonous insects as a diet, in order to study the toxin's compounds. And the bitter thing is kind of an after-the-thought thing to try and convince people they're concerned about fools who lick extremely deadly frogs.

I have to agree with you there... breeding out the toxins would make more sense... or even finding out what causes the toxins. I know in the real life dart frogs, where the xotl is derived from, (also known as Dendrobatidae), the toxicity is from their native prey: ants, beetles, and termites (which have eaten plants that have toxins.)
That said, in captivity, Dendrobatids are fed meals of fruit flies, which do not contain these toxins, thus rendering the dendrobatids harmless. :) You can even take wild-caught Dendrobatids and feed them on fruit flies, and they lose the toxicity. I believe it varies per sub-species, with some losing toxicity in the span of a few weeks, and others taking years to do so. :)

"Xotl breeders are currently selective breeding xotls to be extremely bitter tasting to help avoid future, unnecessary deaths."
I cannot imagine something so useless if one lick is already capable of killing you. xD Will tasting bad sway anyone away who really wanted to get high? Could they selectively breed out the hallucogenic, euphoric effect, or the poison, instead? What kind of culture is it that people will recreationally lick something so deadly but definitely will care if it's bitter? Are there poison-eater hobbiests who love keeping xotls and licking them and are petitioning breeders who endeavor to make the xotls bitter? Please tell me more about this world!

The description of these are hilarious considering I have a blacklight xotl named LickMe and his tc is full of poison.

So cute! Frogs are a gift tbh.
Also, just a quick thing I noticed, in the line "Eventually they will merge from the water with fully-formed limbs and join the rest of their kind on land.", it should be emerge, not merge. Super small either way tho

....several warnings have come out about the dangers of licking xotl, which creates something of a euphoric, hallucinogenic effect, but is also extremely deadly. While the average person can survive a single lick, there is no guarantee of this, and every year a handful of people meet their demise at the secretions of a xotl. Xotl breeders are currently selective breeding xotls to be extremely bitter tasting to help avoid future, unnecessary deaths.
lol I am loving this.

Yikes! Seven of my pets have insect minions. No wonder they're always so battered looking.

I've just told my pets they mustn't lick one but the two zombies think they'll be fine if they do. :)

I sometimes forget that people actually do stuff like licking toads.
Why would you remind me of this.

It's weird how often I prefer the lifelike dolls to the actual pet. Really wanting a Xotl now. These are great!
